Who was the first president of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine? Listen to the text and find out. UKRAINIAN SCIENCE Ukrainian science has a long and glorious history. It plays an outstanding role in the spiritual culture of the society, and development of the national economy. There are many research institutes which make a lot of scientific discoveries in different fields of science: space, medicine, nuclear physics. Especially great success has Ukraine achieved in the sphere of electric welding and metallurgy. Much work has been done in space exploration. Ukrainian scientists have developed space systems that are up to the world standard, such as "Kosmos", "Tsyklon", "Zenit", and "Ocean". The world famous Ukrainian scientists are Volodymyr Vernads'kyi, Yevhen and Borys Paton, Mykola Amosov. Volodymyr Vernads'kyi was the first President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He was a prominent naturalist, mineralogist, the founder of geochemistry and biochemistry. Borys Paton is at the head of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences at present. For many years he headed the institute of Electronic Welding, founded by his father. Numerous joint research centres were founded on its basis. After listening T: Answer the questions. 1.What branches of Ukrainian science are the most successful? 2.What are the world-known space systems, developed by Ukrainian scientists? 3.What do you know about Borys Paton? V. Speaking. T: We have some reporters prepared by our students about prominent scientists. Let‘s listen the information. P. Old Rus monasteries had the first centres of sciences. The 15th-17th centuries saw the peak of creative talent of physician Yuriy of Drohobych and linguists L.Zyzaniy and P.Berynda. Old Rus monasteries had the first centres of sciences. PI: Yevhen Paton was an outstanding Ukrainian constructor, famous for his contribution to bridge building and welding. He studied engineering in Dresden and St Petersburg and in 1904 became Professor of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute where he headed the bridge-testing laboratory. He designed over 35 bridges. Y.Paton was the father of electronic welding. P2: The creation of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1918 was an event of historical importance. Among its founding members were Volodymyr Vernads'kyi and Mykhailo Hrushevs'kyi. P3: Mykola Kybalchych (1853 - 1881) was born m(me)Chernihiv Region. He died at the age of 28. but he managed to create a great deal. While waiting for capital punishment after an attempt upon Alexander 11 life he prepared in a prison cell an original design of an aircraft with rocket engine. Serhiy Koroliov (1907 - 1966) was born in the city of Zhytomyr. He was outstanding creator of the practical space engineering. In 1924 he finished a professional technical school in Odesa. hi 1924 - 1926 he studied in Kyiv Polytechnic institute, in 1930 he graduated from Moscow higher technical school and at the same time he finished Moscow pilot school. Under his supervision new rockets were designed and launched. Among them were ballistic and geographical rockets, rocket-carriers and spacecraft "Vostok" and "Voskhod" the first automatic interplanetary station "Zond". The spacecraft designed under his guidance made real the flights to Venus and Mars and walking in the outer space. P4: Galileo Galiley was the Italian scientist of 16th century who invented the first telescope. Р5: Petro Kapitsa (1894 - 1984) was a noted scientist in the field of nuclear physics and technologies of super powerful magnetic fields. Petro Kapitsa was awarded with the Nobel Prize for his works. He was a Ukrainian who made a great contribution into development of physics working in England and Russia. Anatoly Oleksandrov is another Ukrainian scientist and inventor. Under his supervision the first in the world atomic-powered vessel was created. I.Kurchatov split the nucleus of atom. Nobel Prize laureate academician Lev Landau worked in Kharkiv for many years, heading the Institute of Physics and Technology. Mykola Barabashov worked in Kharkiv Observatory and made significant discoveries concerning Mars, Moon and Venice. Р6: Adolf Sax is a Belgian musician. He invented such instrument as saxophone in 1842. Р7: Graham Bell on March 10, 1876 made an instrument that successfully transmitted a sentence. It was a telephone. Р8: Martin Kuper is an American engineer. He was a creater of one of the first mobile telephones. P9.Rudolf Diesel is the German engineer who invented the Diesel engine in 1897 and so began a transport revolution in cars, lorries and trains. Р10. The first electronic computing machine in Europe was designed by our countryman S.Lebediev in 1951. Fon Neymon is an American scientist in the field of physics, mathimatics, economy. He created the first lamp computer. Its weigh was 30tons. Reading the text “Outstanding people of Ukraine” Outstanding people of Ukraine In the history of humanity there have been always people whose actions and ideas produced a great impact on the lives of other people. They have made a great contribution to our country. For this reason they are called outstanding. There are a lot of outstanding people famous for their contribution to our science. They are scientist, musicians, experienced and skilled workers of medicine and education. Volodymyr Vernadsky, for instance, was the first President of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He was born in 1863. Volodymyr Vernadsky was the first in our country to introduce the spectral method for the solution of geochemical problems. He developed special study to the composition of the Earth‘s crust, the ocean and the atmosphere. Vernadsky was founder of the modern doctrine on the biosphere. His findings greatly contributed to another to the world science. Yevhen Paton is another great scientist whom we take pride in. He was born in 1870 in the family of a Russian ambassador and received his education abroad. In 1904 Paton moved to Kyiv to work and teach at the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute. Yevhen Paton was the first to apply electro- welding in bridge construction. Under his guidance a welded bridge was built across the Dnieper river in Kyiv. It is now known as the Paton bridge. It is 1.5 km long. In 1930 Paton organized the Research Institute of Electro-welding at the Academy of Sciences. VI.
