RUN-ONS
A RUN-ON sentence is two or more sentences written as one sentence. It is usually
composed of two sentences separated by a comma or two sentences not separated
at all.
Below are two RUN-ONs. Can you hear and see two sentences with each one?
A. Michael paid $2,000.00 for the classic car now he had to get it into operating
condition.
B. Jennifer tried to find a summer job, babysitting was becoming rather
tiresome for her after three summers with the Millers.
These CAN be fixed! There are THREE ways of correcting RUN-ON sentences.
METHOD ONE
Divide the separate thoughts in the RUN-ON into two separate sentences.
Use a period at the end of the first sentence. Use a capital letter at the beginning of
the second.
RO – The Trojan War lasted ten years the Illiad tells the story of that war.
S – The Trojan War lasted ten years. The Illiad tells the story of that war.
METHOD TWO
Divide the separate thoughts in the RUN-ON into a compound sentence by
using a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, etc.).
RO – I didn’t pass my driver’s test, I can’t drive to the party tonight.
S – I didn’t pass my driver’s test, and I can’t drive to the party tonight.
METHOD THREE
Use a semicolon between the two sentences.
RO- My brothers and I grew up in the country, we really miss it now.
S – My brothers and I grew up in the country; we really miss it now.
HOWEVERs … When the word HOWEVER is used in the middle of a sentence to
show a contradiction make sure you punctuate correctly.
EX: Last year we spent our vacation at the beach; however, this summer we plan to
go camping in Maine.

complete sentences.

the best golfer ever.
