RUN-ONS A RUN-ON sentence is two or more sentences written as one sentence. It is usually composed of two sentences separated by a comma or two sentences not separated at all. Below are two RUN-ONs. Can you hear and see two sentences with each one? A. Michael paid $2,000.00 for the classic car now he had to get it into operating condition. B. Jennifer tried to find a summer job, babysitting was becoming rather tiresome for her after three summers with the Millers. These CAN be fixed! There are THREE ways of correcting RUN-ON sentences. METHOD ONE Divide the separate thoughts in the RUN-ON into two separate sentences. Use a period at the end of the first sentence. Use a capital letter at the beginning of the second. RO – The Trojan War lasted ten years the Illiad tells the story of that war. S – The Trojan War lasted ten years. The Illiad tells the story of that war. METHOD TWO Divide the separate thoughts in the RUN-ON into a compound sentence by using a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, etc.). RO – I didn’t pass my driver’s test, I can’t drive to the party tonight. S – I didn’t pass my driver’s test, and I can’t drive to the party tonight. METHOD THREE Use a semicolon between the two sentences. RO- My brothers and I grew up in the country, we really miss it now. S – My brothers and I grew up in the country; we really miss it now. HOWEVERs … When the word HOWEVER is used in the middle of a sentence to show a contradiction make sure you punctuate correctly. EX: Last year we spent our vacation at the beach; however, this summer we plan to go camping in Maine. RUN-ONS Now it’s your turn to practice correcting RUN-ON sentences.
