Presidents Report
Dear Members, Patrons and Sponsors
The 2013/14 season has been a fantastic and successful year both on and off the court.
There is organised tennis on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and we
have pennant teams playing Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
Combine this with Total Tennis Reabold coaching, cardio tennis, court hire, club house hire
and Zumba makes Reabold Tennis Club a very active place all year round.
Off the court the club has had a very successful year financially. Costs have been very well
controlled and income from other sources other than membership fees is 74% of our total
income. This has allowed the Board to have NO increase in membership fees for the coming
year. You can see in greater detail the income breakdown in Mike Hendrik’s report.
(Finance Chairperson)
A special mention must go to Board Member Geoff Stooke whose initiative “When The
Crowd Stops Cheering” allowed us to raise $11,000 and along with a Town of Cambridge
contribution allowed us to air-condition the club house.
We are also in the process of expanding our shade sail areas at the back of courts 11-13, 16
and 17 for the comfort of members and spectators.
Board
The Board consisting of Tania Hayward, Mike Hendriks, Jane Glass, Stuart McCurdy, Geoff
Stooke and up until April Nick Scriabine have had a very busy and productive year. Nick gave
Reabold nearly 3 years of service and with his expertise in IT and Marketing he made a
substantial contribution. Nick and his family arrived from the US and within no time he put
his hand up to help out on the Board. The Scriabine family were great contributors to the
club and we look forward to a return visit from them sometime in the future.
Some Board members have written specific reports for this document so please take time to
read them. The commitment, desire and willingness of the Board to see the club continue to
grow and prosper has been truly outstanding in this past year. I am extremely grateful for
their support and the work they do for the betterment of all members of the club and on
behalf of all members I thank them for their outstanding contribution to the club.
Board Secretary
Since the introduction of the Reabold Board we have had three Board Secretaries; namely
Leonie Broom, Gavin Broom and for the past 12 months we have been very fortunate to
have Helen Ashenden in the role. Helen has continued to maintain the very high standard
of minute taking and her timely efficiency and ongoing task sheets means nothing escapes
our attention. Thank you Helen.
Club Manager
In May 2013 Gary Bretnall succeeded our inaugural full time manager Martina Alessandro.
Gary had to hit the ground running last year with the end of year accounts and AGM
occurring within the first few months of commencing. Gary has done a wonderful job in
getting to know the members, organizing Saturday sets, balancing the budget, controlling
expenditure, assisting with pennants, controlling the club website and Facebook, running
the bar, running Junior club, liaising with Total Tennis, Tennis West, Tennis Australia,
Department of Sport & Recreation, Town of Cambridge and dealing with all the day to day
tasks that always arise in a busy club.
The Board has been impressed with the smooth transition between managers and Gary’s
willingness to tackle all tasks presented to him.
Club Sponsors
On behalf of all members I wish to thank all our sponsors – see list attached. This year we
welcomed our new major sponsor in Westside Auto Wholesale. The list of sponsors
continues to expand and I ask all club members wherever possible to support them. You will
notice in the financial statements that the sponsors represent a substantial income stream
for the club.
Total Tennis Reabold
The club continues to benefit enormously from the fantastic efforts of “Total Tennis
Reabold”. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the coaches and staff at Total Tennis and
the variety of programmes they deliver augers well for the future of the club.
One initiative worth mentioning has been the Hot Shot Grand Slam Tournaments kindly
sponsored by the Matera Group (Phil & Sue Matera). This is one of the reasons why
Reabold Tennis Club is recognized as the number one Hot Shot Club in WA.
The team from Total Tennis Reabold has written a comprehensive review that is tabled later
in this report outlining their achievements in the last twelve months.
Thanks to Matt Holmes, Simon Harper and Ben Tullett and their team of assistant coaches
for all their efforts throughout the year.
Tournament
Reabold successfully ran the Reabold Junior Hard Court Tournament in October 2013 and it
will be held again this year in the first week in October. The matches were all played at
Reabold unlike the previous year when it was split between Reabold and Hale School.
Tournament Director Leslee Holmes from Total Tennis continues to do an outstanding job
and many thanks must go to all the volunteer club members who assisted throughout the
tournament. Club Manager Gary Bretnall was assistant director and the financial benefit to
the club and the showcasing of our facilities makes this a very worthwhile event.
Honourable Mentions
I hope I don’t miss anyone but I apologise in advance if I do. Thank you to the following for
assisting the club above and beyond being a club member.
Barney Richards – Saturday afternoon tea
Claude Hayward (Mr Fixit) – Chair & squeegee repairer, table tennis and pool table fixer,
planting, weeding and mowing the bank and many other repair jobs around the club.
Mention it to Claude and it gets done.
Jane Glass – Women’s pennant coordinator, Junior pennant coordinator, Tennis West
delegate
Mike Hendriks – Tennis West delegate
Jim Ashenden – Tennis West delegate, Claude’s assistant
Sandy Clarke – Mid Week pennant coordinator
Meg Durston & Jane Golden – Tuesday Ladies Captains
Senior Pennant Captains – Men’s and Women’s Pennants
Parent Managers – Junior pennants.
Town of Cambridge
We continue to have an excellent relationship with the Town of Cambridge. We have a
comprehensive lease document with guaranteed tenure and NO rent but a funding
agreement which sees us contribute some $15,000 per annum and matched $2 to our $1 by
the Town. Funds are allocated into three areas, namely a Building Fund, Tennis Court
Surface and Lighting Fund and a Car parks and Surrounds Fund. When capital works or
maintenance is required in any of the above areas funds are available which in reality
guarantees the upkeep and maintenance of our facilities.
The arrangement we have with the Town of Cambridge is seen as the leading Club / LGA
model throughout the country by Tennis Australia.
Summary
To the club members, patrons, parents, supporters and friends I wish to thank you on behalf
of your Board for your participation and support of the tennis, social and fundraising
activities and support of the Total Tennis programmes throughout the past year and may
you continue to embrace all things that the tennis club offers.

This revenue also enables the club to fund amongst other operating expenditure a full time
manager. With a full time manager along with support from the board and club members
we continue to have the resources to maintain and increase these revenue streams and
manage expenditure to ensure the club remains in a sound financial position and offers the
highest level of service to our members.
I take this opportunity to thank our club manager Gary Bretnall for his assistance in
preparing the annual report but also preparing monthly management accounts on a timely
basis. Finally I thank our honorary auditor Michael Langoulant for again providing his
services.

Reabold Tennis Club is fortunate to have a number of club members and external sponsors
who continue to offer their support for the club; see list attached. I urge all club members to
seek out these sponsors and use their services wherever possible. For special offers check

This year we secured a number of new sponsors including Westside Auto Wholesale as our
new major sponsor. I also welcome Drakesbrook wines from Liquor Barons Jolimont, Matera
Group along with Mariana Kaker from Explosives Manufacturing Services who were all new
silver sponsors and Celebrant Marg Nevard and Sadhna Maroo from Chi Walking/Chi
Running as new bronze sponsors. These along with a long list of existing sponsors make a
very valuable contribution to our club and on behalf of the board and all club members I
thank all our sponsors for their generous support of Reabold.

Social Tennis Report
The social tennis at the club continues to be well supported throughout the year, and we
have the regular players who attend almost every Saturday. In the extreme heat or the most
dreadful wintery day, they are there to play when there’s a gap in the showers. The Tuesday
morning ladies have a fantastic group, and are consistently well attended. The Wednesday
afternoon men’s group have their regular players and those who make the effort when they
are available. Unfortunately, our Thursday morning men’s group numbers are dwindling due
to injury and age, so I urge any male members who are retired and sitting home on a
Thursday morning to come down and boost the numbers.
House and Social – 2013/14
As the saying goes “time flies when you are having fun” and in the past 12 months we
certainly have had some fun at RTC. The vibrancy & commitment of members and friends
who attend our many and varied functions continues to be an integral part of the success of
our wonderful club. These functions would not be a success without the continued support
of the wonderful social committee. Many thanks ladies – you know who you are.
Our social year kicked off with Opening Day 2013 and once again the weather gods were not
on our side. The heavens opened once again and we had a feeling of “déjà vu” from 2012.
This however did not dissuade 60+ guests from attending our sumptuous roast dinner with
all the trimmings. They did however need to wade their way through the sea of umbrellas
at the front entrance to make their way into our cosy clubhouse!!!
The Club also played host to the Reabold Junior Hard-court Tournament during 2013. The
Canteen was a hive of activity, table tennis competitions were in full swing and more than
150 junior tennis stars used every inch of our Clubhouse. I don’t think I have ever seen so
many tennis bags in a given space. It was fabulous!!!
November always heralds the onset of the warmer weather and of course our annual
“Presidents Cocktail Party”. 140 guests were treated to yet another fantastic event coupled
with great weather, fabulous food and hilarious entertainment. The Reabold Cup was run
for the second consecutive year and the winner was “Scottish Miss” a very new member at
the time. Congratulations to the organising committee for a job well done.
By now we set our plans into gear for the festive season which is always a very busy but
enjoyable time of the year at RTC. Father Christmas paid a visit and an angel named Billie
Court was sent from heaven to entertain us with Christmas carols. Billie is an outstanding
vocalist and she certainly got us all into the spirit of Christmas. The kids had a ball!!! We
look forward to having her entertain us in the future.
2014 started with a flurry. The social committee got together and mapped out a very busy
social calendar for the coming year. A gourmet burger night started proceedings and 63
guests enjoyed the evening. Special mention to Claude Hayward for his excellent cooking
skills on the BBQ – you are a real trooper. Thank you.
With great sadness we said farewell to the Scriabine family in April who relocated back to
the US after 3+ years “Down Under”. Many members joined them at our Pizza at Sunset
sundowner to wish them well. They will be sadly missed.
Now I am going to go out on a limb and say the next function we had at the Club was one of
the “BEST” ever at RTC. Our inaugural sports panel evening held in early May – “When the
Crowd Stops Cheering” was the brain child of Geoff Stooke and 75 guests were treated to a
fine dining affair incorporating a panel of ex-sports stars recounting their individual
professions following their retirement from their chosen sport. John Welborn, Alicia Molik
& Andrew Embley were very entertaining and the catering from Karen Hughie-Wiliams and
her team from forty-seven Kirwan Street, Floreat was outstanding. A great night was had by
all and funds raised enabled the installation of much needed air-conditioning in the
Clubhouse. We now all look forward to the benefits of this much needed resource.
Only two weeks after our “event of the year” the club hosted its very first Paella night. 70
guests enjoyed this popular Spanish dish cooked by an on-site chef. There was even enough
for seconds. This will definitely need to be included on next year’s social calendar.
To round out a very busy year the Club conducted its annual Quiz night. Once again Geoff
Stooke took this under his wing and produced a fabulous array of questions. Everyone
enjoyed themselves.
So in closing I would like to thank those who have supported our functions, hired our
clubhouse, embarked on taking up Zumba on one of the 6 days it is conducted at the Club
and continued to be part of our wonderful club. The future of RTC shines very bright.

Senior Club Championships - 2013/14
The Senior Club Championships took place over 2 weekends 29/30 March and 5/6 April.
There were 38 entries across 8 events. There was a great mixture of social and pennant
players who played in the Championship. The men’s championship was highly contested,
even though some of the higher division men pennant players did not play our state league
juniors were more than capable of filling the gap. Both championship singles and doubles
finals were contested by state league juniors.
The men’s final was a brotherly love affair with Tom & Will Hann were drawn to face each
other. It was a great contest going deep into the 3rd set over 2.5hrs.
A subcommittee has been formed to see how we improve the running of the senior club
tournament which includes running the championship singles at the start of the season with
the final on Open day, the doubles competition during April and making it an opt out
competition.

Senior Pennant Report- 2013/14
As highlighted in last year’s annual report Reabold retained its position in the top 4 clubs in
terms of teams entered in the Tennis West competitions with 36 teams entered across the
board which was an increase from 32 last summer. This was a fantastic achievement. During
the 2013/14 summer season Reabold had three Saturday Women’s teams and many of
these players came through our junior ranks to progress to this level. There were also five
Saturday Men’s teams and a long list of willing reserves who have helped the club field full
teams each week when players are injured, on leave or had school and uni exams. A squad
of 38 men and 26 women were needed to fill these teams throughout the season. Thanks to
all those players.
One of the highlights from the summer season was the victory by our Women’s Division 5
team. They finished in 1st position on the ladder and played the second team Mandurah at
home in a very close final. The team of Jane Glass, Danica Delaney, Billie Court, Jessica
Wellman and Sandy Clarke won by 5 games on the day which was a superb effort as
Mandurah had a very strong number one player who dominated the competition. Special
mention must be made of Carol Putland who played many games throughout the season for
this team. The Men’s Division 15 team of Hamza Hoosenally, Shane Rogers, Thomas Smyth
and Henning Jacobsen also played in the grand final of their division but were beaten on the
day by a very strong team from Manning.
The teams that participated in the semi-finals were the Women’s Div 1 team who lost their
semi-final to City Beach and the Men’s Div 10 team who lost in their semi-final to Mt Lawley.
The current winter season is nearly over and Reabold has fielded 5 senior Saturday teams, 6
Wednesday midweek teams, 8 junior teams and 4 midweek night teams for a total of 23
teams. This positions us as the 3rd top club in the metropolitan area for winter teams
entered which demonstrates how tennis is becoming an all year round game.
The club is very keen to keep encouraging this and maximising the use our facilities get over
the whole year. Our large group of expat and international members certainly make up a
significant proportion of our players and they certainly make the most of the club’s great
facilities and wonderful weather all year round.
Midweek night competitions for men, women and mixed teams are the big growth areas in
the Tennis West run league (along with Hot Shots) and with our hot days and beautiful
balmy nights we would encourage more members to consider entering the night comps this
coming season. We have a Monday night women’s team who have entered the new
singles/doubles format for the first time and Lisa Ettridge, Barb Tate, Katrina Green and
Neesha Flint are all thoroughly enjoying the mix of singles and doubles play in the shortened
format.
Finally thanks must go to the many team captains who did a fabulous job getting their teams
ready and organised each week. Most mastered Results Vault with ease and entered their
results within the deadlines. Thanks also to Matthew Holmes and Simon Harper (Total
Tennis Reabold) who took the players for training each week. This created a great club and
team culture. Gary Bretnall our club manager has assisted ably and willingly all year and has
done a wonderful job on match days either in entering teams and managing Results Vault
data, supervising roles or in setting up the courts and preparing scorecards.
Pennants is certainly the growth area for membership within our club and we look forward
to seeing more new faces competing for Reabold in the coming season.

Junior Club:
On Saturday 15th of March 12 of Reabold juniors visited Onslow Park to enjoy a morning of
social tennis and games. It was a great morning and the Reabold juniors represented the
club in a very positive manner.
The junior tournament was held over 2 weekends in late March. The running of the
tournament coincided with finals of junior pennants and couldn’t be run at any other time
due to an early Easter. There were 34 boys and 18 girls that entered the tournament, with
the majority of entry in the orange and green ball competitions showing great promise at
grass roots level. On the 30th March, final afternoon of the tournament, we had the
culmination of the tournament and pennant season, with trophies and medals awarded to
pennant team and tournament winners. A subcommittee has been formed to see how we
improve the running of the junior tournament which includes running at the start of the
season and making it an opt out competition.
Junior Pennant Report - 2013/14
Reabold fielded 18 junior teams in the 2013/14 summer season and five of these played in
Grand Finals on Sunday March the 16th. All five of these teams successfully won their shields

making it a total of seven winning teams last summer. That is one of the best club results in
recent history.

The Hot Shots program at Reabold continues to grow thanks to the absolute commitment of
Total Tennis and this will definitely lead to the development of some excellent players. The
problem will be in the future not having enough courts to accommodate them all! What a
wonderful problem to have. Our older juniors are also developing well and establishing
themselves as great role models for the younger players.
As Pennant Coordinator I have really enjoyed the wonderful energy around the club on a
Sunday morning. All courts are full, the playground is full of younger siblings, the canteen is
always busy and the table tennis table gets a very good work out. I urge some of our older
club members to come down on a Sunday and just enjoy seeing these young members
playing great tennis.
A Music Quiz Night was held on Friday the 14th March as a season windup and social event
for all of our junior pennant teams. It was a lot of fun, very noisy and definitely rated very
highly with everyone who attended. The “Foo Fighters” lead by Indi Smethurst, Stefan Biga,
David Lind, Auxence Gide and Jeffrey Zhou were the eventual winners. All teams were very
close on the scoreboard and special mention must go to our Orange Ball teams who despite
being the youngest were very competitive on the night. Thanks to our parent helpers Joy
Fruscher, Angela Kempkes, Narelle Blackie, Tina Lind, Jocelyn Young and Daming Zhou.
Special thanks must go to Jim Ashenden who is always willing to assist with set ups and
Match Supervision. The canteen was stocked and managed by our club manager Gary
Bretnall and operated each week with the help of a parent roster. The money raised from
the canteen is spent as required on new scoreboards, table tennis equipment and functions
like the pennant presentations held in April. Thanks to all the parents and players who make
up our wonderful club.
Finally, special mention must be made of the coaching staff from “Total Tennis” who have
taken a great interest in all teams and worked hard to ensure all players are well trained and
prepared for their matches.

Grounds Report – 2013/14
Our Groundsman Sean Kehane continues to be very proactive in managing our grass courts
and surrounds. The grass courts this season were as good as they have been for many years
and this is due to Sean’s knowledge and attention to detail.
This year the club purchased a leaf vacuum cleaner which has helped enormously with the
maintenance of the 8 hard courts and the club surrounds.
Reabold still has the best lines in the metropolitan area and Sean’s special mixture is as
much of a secret as KFC’s herbs and spices. We receive lots of positive feedback on the lines.
Special thanks needs to go to the Town of Cambridge who continue to help with the pruning
of trees, supplying wood chips, removal of rubbish and general willingness to help whenever
possible. The reticulation pump is undergoing a major service as part of our maintenance
agreement with the TOC hopefully guaranteeing its longevity.
The maintenance program has commenced for the upcoming season with all courts being
vertimowed in early July. Top dressing of the courts will not occur this year and hopefully
with the right weather conditions the planned opening day of Saturday 18th October will be
on track.
Tuesday Ladies Midweek Tennis Report – 2013/14
After a very well organised year of Ladies mid-week tennis Natha and Terri stood down and
Meg Durston and Jane Golden took over.
The Tuesday Ladies are a lovely group and Tuesday mornings are full of good tennis and
many laughs.
Following in the tradition of previous Captains, several tournaments have been organised
and it is interesting to see the social ladies become ferocious competitors. Always played
with good spirit and ending with raffles, a sumptuous lunch and a corny joke or too.
The special morning teas are still very popular and a chance for all to catch up for a cuppa
and cake after tennis.
We have also had a couple of guest speakers in, including Adam Floyd a local
physiotherapist talking about injury prevention, which was very informative.
The attendance has generally been very good, at times in the summer all available courts
were busy and we have had a few new members join us over recent months.
As we enter the rainy season which we accept we do need, we just hope it doesn't rain on
Tuesdays if that can be arranged!

Women’s Midweek Pennant Tennis – 2013/14
The past 12 months has been very successful for our Women’s midweek pennant teams.
There has been strong participation and the arrival of several new members to our club who
have enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of our wonderful Reabold ladies. This Winter
Reabold has 6 Teams playing on Wednesday, 1 Thursday Night and 1 team playing in the
newly formulated 3 person competition on a Monday night, which is great to see that
Reabold is a very competitive Pennant Club.
Summer 2013/14:
With regard to Midweek tennis pennants last Summer Reabold had 5 out of 6 Midweek
teams on Wednesday that made it into the finals, which is a fantastic effort. Especially when
you have two teams in the same division.
On Wednesday the two teams that made it to the finals, unfortunately losing their
respective finals were the Over 45’s Div. 1 (Capt. Sandy Clarke) and the Midweek Open Div.
4 (Capt. Wendy Dallas-Smith).
We also had two teams that lost in the Semi-final and they were the Over 45’s Div. 2 (Capt.
Olga Shepherd) and Over 55’s Div. 2 (Capt. Kerrie Phillips)
The Thursday Night teams still enjoyed themselves even though they didn’t make it to the
finals.
On the flip side there was one lucky team to WIN on Wednesday and that was the Over 45’s
Div.3 ladies which included Tania Hayward, Angela Kempkes, Susan Salvair, Karen Hodson
and Marise Dawson. It was a very exciting match to see with the outcome being Reabold 7
sets - 55 games beating Wembley Downs 2 sets - 30 games.
Winter 2013:
Reabold had only 3 teams that made it into the finals, which included Wednesday Div. 4
(Capt. Angela Kempkes), Tuesday Div. 1 (Capt. Jan Beale.) and Thursday Night Div. 7 (Capt.
Cherylle Culloton). Unfortunately no team won but the weather ended up being good
enough that most teams had completed matches every week, which is excellent.

Total Tennis Annual Report – 2013/14
When Gary asked for our annual report, I could not believe another year had passed. It has
been a year full of great achievements and given the staff at Total Tennis something to be
really proud of.
Our Hotshots Program is now widely acknowledged as one of the best in Australia with
regular visits from Tennis Australia staff to check on the success of the program. Simon has
taken the Red Ball to great heights and we are now getting players from all over Perth
wanting to join our squads. We have Rob Kilderry as a regular visitor checking on the
program and following the players with interest. Rob reports to Tennis West and Tennis
Australia.
Our Matera Group Hotshots Grand Slams are becoming more and more successful each
time and we have had some great results with our own players. Parents have found the
Friday night time slot great as the fathers can come and watch the children play and enjoy
the bar and its facilities. It has been very good having the crèche available and we hope to
increase the scope of it this coming term.
Peter and Leslee have now sold the Pinnacles Caravan Park and will be back to help with the
coaching business in Term 4. Peter has spent time doing a review of the business, the staffing
and the programs and we will be increasing what we have on offer starting in October.
We have said goodbye to Narelle Blackie and Alistair Duncanson this year and we wish them all
the best for the future.
We welcome Ben Tullett to the team and hope that members will take advantage of his wealth
of knowledge and playing experience. Ben has played at Men’s State League Level and had a
successful coaching career at the Bayswater Tennis Club.
Adult Pennant training continues to grow and we thank Reabold Tennis Club for this great
initiative.
The super 10’s competition is also a great starting place for our players and we thank Simon for
his efforts in helping out players to become ready for this competition. Our Pathways into the
Tennis West Programs are well known and we are very happy to continue working with the
State Coach to produce strong, sound players to continue their growth at State Level. Our young
players continue with their successes and we have had some great tournament wins this year.
We acknowledge the great job done by Jane Glass with the junior pennants. This does not just
happen, it is the culmination of months of hard work and painstaking effort to achieve the
results that we have. The results from pennants have certainly made it all worth the effort for
Jane.
Total Tennis has forged a great relationship with Gary, our capable manager. Gary is a great help
and support to us and we work as a very strong team to attract more members and players to
Reabold Tennis Club.
We welcome Kay-Leigh to our coaching team. Kay-Leigh is a very strong player and a successful
South African Junior Player in her youth. Kay-Leigh has become a great Hit-Up partner for the up
and coming players and is working hard getting them ready for the summer pennants and
tournaments.
Simon has attracted funding for the Town Of Cambridge Schools Competition which will
culminate in a Grand Final at Reabold which should ensure that we are able to showcase our
club to a great number of people from our area. He is still in the process of dealing with our
sponsors to complete the process and start signing up the schools. We thank Simon for the
tireless effort he puts in to the Red Ball players and the passion he shows to advancing our
young ones.
Congratulations to all our pennant teams who continue to do well especially our mid-week
ladies who invest so much time and effort into their tennis. It is great to see. We still find it
difficult to keep being innovative and strong in an area with so much competition but I am sure
with Leslee and Peter on board again we will go from strength to strength in the coming year.
