For the first time in the Eastern Cape, The Edge Mountain Retreat and Lowestoffe Country Lodge will be hosting a trout
fishing, clay pigeon shooting and whiskey tasting weekend in and around the beautiful Hogsback.
The trout fishing, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding will take place on Lowestoffe farm, which is approximately 20kms
from Hogsback. This is surely one of the most beautiful farms in South Africa and offers the perfect setting for the
weekend’s activities.
For those who do not wish to participate in the trout fishing and clay-pigeon shooting, there is the option to go horse riding
on this majestic farm.
All the superb meals at The Edge Mountain Retreat will be prepared by our professional chef and will be influenced by the
trout, whiskey and Scottish Highlands theme. Excellent wines to match will be on offer.
Everyone needs to bring their own rods and fly-fishing equipment, but all gear for the clay pigeon shooting will be provided.
Please bring clothing for all weather conditions, and just in case, pack your rain coats! For obvious reasons, no alcohol will be
allowed on the farm until after everyone has had their turn at the clay pigeon shooting.
FRIDAY
Friday 7 pm. Welcome presentation.
At the welcome presentation we will run through the weekend’s program and guests will be divided into two groups. The one
group will fly fish on Saturday morning and shoot on Saturday afternoon. The other group will shoot in the morning and fly
fish in the afternoon.
Friday 8pm. Dinner.
Starter: Cold smoked trout and fennel tart with a horseradish sauce.
Main: Sous Vide rib eye beef steak with a wild mushroom and whiskey cream sauce served with fresh asparagus and a
truffle potato puree.
Dessert: Whiskey, mint and Lindt chocolate terrine served with strawberries and a raspberry coulis.
Retire to your cottage or have a drink at our cosy bar, and then prepare for an early morning!
SATURDAY
7am. Breakfast.
Fresh fruit salad, home-made breads, pastries and muesli, Hogsback trout and spring onion scrambled eggs on a potato rosti
served with a hollandaise sauce. Tea and coffee.
8.30am. Drive to Lowestoffe.
Follow our group leaders and self-drive to Lowestoffe farm. One group will head to the dams, and the other to the clay
pigeon shooting area. Instructors will be on hand for both groups.
10am. to ± 12pm. Fly-fishing and clay pigeon shooting.
Mid-morning refreshments of iced tea, homemade ginger-beer and lemonade with homemade shortbread will be available for
both groups.
12.30pm. Picnic Lunch.
We all meet at a central location on the farm for a delicious picnic lunch. Home-made seed bread and ciabatta, Smoked
trout pâté, trout gravlax, cheese and preserves, aioli chicken, cold meats and salad and a soft drink.
2pm. to ± 4pm. Fly-fishing and clay pigeon shooting.
The morning fishers go shooting in the afternoon and the morning shooters go fly-fishing.
Afternoon refreshments of iced tea, homemade ginger-beer and lemonade with homemade shortbread will be available for
both groups.
4.30pm. Drive to the Edge.
We leave the farms to drive back to The Edge where you have some time to rest and refresh before the evening’s
entertainment.
7pm. Whiskey tasting.
A quick snack of a Yorkshire pudding with trout and a home-made mustard mayonnaise to line your tummy before we
attempt a formal tasting of 6 whiskeys, both international and South African, conducted by Gregg Thompson from Distell.
8pm. Dinner.
Starter: Guinea fowl with Gruyere gnocchi and micro greens.
Main: Sesame crusted trout fillet marinated in whiskey served with a lemon buerre blanc and pancetta lentils.
Dessert: Hogsback berries flambéed in whiskey served with a panna cotta and an almond crisp with thick jersey cream.
10pm.
Retire to your cottage or enjoy a few drinks at our cosy bar.
SUNDAY
8.30am. to 9.30am. Breakfast.
Fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, muesli, pastries, homemade breads, cheeses. Poaches eggs with bacon, trout and creamed spinach
served on French toast. Tea and coffee.
10.30am. for 11am. Farewell presentation.
This will include a slide show of the weekend’s activities, a brief feedback chat, and an introduction of an upcoming event.
A DVD with pictures of the weekend will also be on sale.
Before leaving each guest will be given a token goodie bag to take home.
12pm. Depart.
Before making their way home, guests are welcome to spend the rest of the day:
exploring Hogsback’s walks, waterfalls, art and crafts
horse-riding on Lowestoffe
visiting a few of the beautiful Hogsback gardens and nurseries.
Price: R1800.00 per person (excluding accommodation)

To be a part of the weekend’s activities all guests must stay at The Edge Mountain Retreat or Lowestoffe Country Lodge.
Accommodation in various cottages on the farm is between 10 and 20 kms from Hogsback. Please remember that all meals
are at The Edge in Hogsback.
