Title: Majoring in psychology: achieving your educational and career goals / Jeffrey L. Helms,
Daniel T. Rogers.
Call Number: BF76 .H45 2015
I chose Majoring in Psychology: Achieving Your Educational and Career Goals (2015),
by Daniel T. Rogers resource because it was the first source that popped up and the title really
stuck to me. The title got right to the point and I knew I would be able to find my answers within
this text. Roger’s book contains information such as why you should major in psychology,
assessing and developing career goals, different ways to use your bachelor’s degree in
psychology, preparing for graduate school, applying to graduate school, and many different
careers in psychology like research, clinical, educational and etc. The main question I had before
finding this source was: what are some different types of careers I can choose from if I continue
on the road of majoring in psychology? I would definitely recommend this to a friend just
because many of my close are also majoring in psychology.
Majoring in Psychology: Achieving Your Educational and Career Goals (2015), gives a
very detailed description of what psychology has to offer, the different subfields within
psychology, advice for preparing and applying to graduate schools and even strategies and career
goals to help you excel as a psychology major. Throughout the book, Helms and Rogers give a
thoroughly explanation of the different things concerning psychology, especially the subfields
and careers. For instance, he stated “experimental psychologists’ expertise is in conducting
psychological research. It is true that conducting research is emphasized in all areas of
psychology. In fact, training in research methodology, experimentation, and statistics will be the
core part of your education as an undergraduate student studying psychology.” (Helms &
Rogers, 2015, pg. 172) Helms and Rogers defines experimental psychology and goes into the
undergraduate education.
