The Work under this Section includes providing all labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary to plant and protect vegetation in Port Angeles Re-Grade planting areas as shown on the construction drawings, including but not limited to vegetation planting and vegetation protection. B. This Work shall consist of seeding sites, planting of shrubs and trees by hand, and installing tree protectors. 1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer's qualifications: Materials to be provided under this Section are to be the product of firms regularly engaged in the cultivation of the specified species or manufacture of a specified material. The native plant materials shall be installed by specialists possessing sufficient technical competence, skills, resources, and ability to complete the Work specified under this Section with a requisite degree of competence in a timely manner. B. Plant material: 1. All plant material shall be nursery grown under climate conditions similar to or hardier than conditions exhibited by the recipient site and grown from seed collected in the Puget Sound area at an elevation of less than 500 feet. 2. Plants shall be of normal habit of growth, healthy, vigorous, and free of damage, disease, insects, insect eggs, and larva. 3. Scientific and common names of plants on drawings shall conform to industry standards. 1.03 SUBMITTALS A. Plant Materials 1. Plant procurement: a. Upon receipt of contract, verify all sources of supply to insure that all plants of the species, size, seed source and quantity specified are available. b. Order all plant material immediately following the receipt of Notice to Proceed. Assure that plants of specified types, sizes, and quantities will, in fact, be as specified at the time of planting. (1) Documentation that all plant material has been ordered. (2) List of plant material and quantities ordered with respective suppliers (include name, address, and phone number) and respective growing or storage locations (with addresses). c. Plant material inspection upon delivery and approval by the Project Representative is required prior to installation of plant material. 2. Plant Quantity: Total number of plants shall be as shown on planting plan and vegetation schedule. 1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. All plant materials shall be transported to planting locations with care to prevent damage. Properly place in a manner which provides complete protection for the roots and branches. Contract No. SW02-2012 Port Angeles Landfill Cell Stabilization Project Page 1 of 3 §32 91 00 Vegetation Planting and Protection B. If planting is delayed more than 24 hours after delivery, remove containerized plants from boxes and set on the ground. Protect plants from sun, drying winds, and/or mechanical damage. Water as necessary until planted. Do not hold plants on site for more than 1 week. 1.05 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS A. Confine Work to areas designated by the contract. Do not disturb existing vegetation outside of project limits. B. Remove all empty containers and all other waste from site. C. Protect plants (roots and shoots) at all times from injury in handling and from desiccation until all installation operations have been completed. Protection of plants on-site following delivery but prior to installation may require use of a shade cloth. D. Provide all necessary safeguards, as approved and/or required by the Project Representative for the protection of all planted areas until provisional inspection /acceptance is accomplished. 1.06 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Plant material: 1. Plant material shall be inspected and approved by the Project Representative prior to acceptance of delivered material. Unsatisfactory material shall be removed from the site immediately and replaced with satisfactory material at the request of the Project Representative. 2. Prior to the Project Representative’s inspection, the Contractor shall place containerized plants upright in blocks to facilitate plant counting and inspections. PART 2 2.01 PRODUCTS PLANT MATERIAL A. General plant material condition: Plant materials shall be healthy and vigorous: normal growth habit and well-foliated (when leafed-out), well-developed root systems free from problems (e.g. no kinked, circling, or j-hooked roots), free from disease, injury, and pests (including insect eggs and larvae). Seedlings should have straight trunks with the leader intact, well-developed canopies (for specified size) with symmetrical branching in all directions, straight, unscarred, and undamaged trunks and branches. Container stock shall be weed-free and shall be grown in size-specified delivery containers for no less than 6 months, but no more than 2 years. B. Quantities and species: quantities, species and varieties, size, and condition as specified in plans, on vegetation schedule, and in specifications. C. Plant stock acclimatization: All plants shall be grown consistently in conditions similar to those characterizing the project site to prevent transplant shock. D. Plant materials will include: The specified seed mix and 10 cubic-inch container shrub and tree variable spacing as shown on the Vegetation Schedule. E. Substitutions: Substitutions will only be permitted under the circumstances where all reasonable attempts to attain specified species have failed. No substitutions shall be made without the prior written approval of the Project Representative. Requests for substitutions must be accompanied by written proof from at least five sources (major suppliers) that any given species is not available. 2.02 TREE PROTECTORS A. For 10 cubic-inch trees (shrubs will not require tree protectors), tree protectors shall be individual 5-inch diameter, solid wall 2.5-foot tall tubes. All tree protectors shall be pressed Contract No. SW02-2012 Port Angeles Landfill Cell Stabilization Project Page 2 of 3 §32 91 00 Vegetation Planting and Protection firmly into the soil and supported by electrician zip ties connecting them to 1 by 2 inch by 3 foot stakes driven into the ground by each tree. 2.03 MYCORRHIZAL INOCULUM A. Plants should be inoculated with “Time of Planting” inoculum available at Reforestation Technologies Incorporated, Salinas, California, or similar product. If plants are nursery inoculated verification of actual mycorrhizal colonization will be required and manufacturer’s installation recommendations will be followed. PART 3 3.01 EXECUTION SITE PREPARATION A. Site will be prepared, seeded, and covered with erosion fabric prior to planting. 3.02 PLANTING OPERATIONS AND PERFORMANCE A. Planting time: Planting windows shall be from November 1 - January 1, subject to confirmation by the Project Representative. B. Plant locations: Planting shall be accomplished using the spacing indicated in the Vegetation Schedule. C. Planting areas: 1. The entire site will be seeded and planted. D. Plant Installation: 1. General a. Notify the Project Representative of all subsurface drainage or soil conditions detrimental to growth or survival of plant material. b. Cut slit in erosion fabric just large enough to excavate hole and plant tree or shrub. c. Excavate planting hole no deeper than the height but at least two times the width of the containerized rootmass. Plants will be installed using a hoedad, planting bar, or garden shovel. d. Remove, large rocks, and other debris from planting hole. e. Remove plant from container (ensure container soil is moist) by gently squeezing or shaking container. f. Place plant in planting hole while keeping the roots vertical. g. Root-shoot interface should be at or slightly above the soil surface, which ensures the lower portion of the stem does not rot due to burial. h. Backfill with native soil and firm soil around plant gently to eliminate air pockets. Take care to not injure root system while backfilling and compacting. E. Browse protectors: Install browse protectors immediately following planting. F. Provisional Inspection: Following planting, a provisional inspection shall be completed by the Project Representative. The Contractor shall notify the Project Representative within two days following completion of installation.
