TERRY BERGDALL PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR INSTITUTE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS USA (ICA USA) Terry is responsible for the “ICA GreenRise Uptown Building” in Uptown, an 8-story multi-use facility that is the largest nonprofit service center in the Midwest. It is the home of dental and medical clinics for homeless and low-income persons, 50-bed interim housing for homeless women, and numerous other social programs that range between urban organic gardening, mental health, substance abuse, job training, and social justice advocacy. Built in 1921, GreenRise received landmark status in 2013 by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks and was invited in 2012 as the first building owned by a nonprofit organization to join “Retrofit Chicago’s Commercial Buildings Initiative.” On September 24, 2014, the ICA GreenRise Building attracted considerable media attention when it went “live” as the largest solar project for generating renewal energy on a building in Chicago outside of the downtown area. ICA is the organizing sponsor of “Accelerate 77,” a program for identifying, connecting, and strengthening community based sustainability initiatives across Chicago neighborhoods. Through ICA’s “Technology of Participation, ToP®,” Terry oversees a national network of 120 licensed contractors that is the most prolific and proficient provider of training programs in group facilitation methods in the country. Prior to his current position, Terry lived in Africa for 18 years where he was the coordinator of the Swedish Cooperative Centre’s "Methods for Active Participation Research and Development Project" (MAP) in Zambia, Kenya, and Tanzania. He earned his PhD in International Development at the University of Wales and is a faculty member of the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute at Northwestern Universit MARIA KIM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER THE CARA PROGRAM After 13 years in the insurance industry (with her last position leading the technology division for a $400m insurance firm), in 2005 Maria Kim joined The Cara Program - a workforce development and leadership development organization helping men and women affected by homelessness and poverty to secure and sustain quality employment. As CEO, she is charged with the oversight of The Cara Program's strategic plan to create or secure 3,500 jobs over five years, through two training campuses, and multiple social enterprises designed to drive jobs for the most difficult to employ. Maria serves on the boards of directors for EPIC Academy and Chicago Women in Philanthropy and the Practitioner Advisory Board for the Science of Philanthropy Initiative. Maria was a fellow for Leadership Greater Chicago's Class of 2008, a 2012 American Marshall Memorial Fellow and a 2013 TEDxMidwest Emerging Leader. Maria received her MBA through the Executive MBA Program of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. ANN FISHER RANEY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER TURNING POINT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE CENTER Ann Raney has worked as a clinician and administrator in community mental health for nearly 30 years. Since 2001, she has served as Chief Executive Officer of Turning Point Behavioral Health Care Center in Skokie. Turning Point is known for its innovative programs, including The Living Room at Turning Point, a psychiatric respite program for adults in crisis. With advanced degrees in social work and religion, Ann has taught at The University of Chicago, is a graduate of Leadership Evanston, and maintains a private psychotherapy and consulting practice. This year, Ann was selected for the Executive Leadership Program by the National Council for Behavioral Health, joining a small group of national leaders who are focusing on progressive issues and methods in mental health care. Her clinical interests include relational therapy, spirituality, and mindfulness. Her position at Turning Point includes staff supervision and consultation as well as administrative oversight because she believes that all members of the agency team benefit from understanding all aspects of the agency’s mission to provide quality care to the community.
