Anatomy/Physiology Final Exam Project

School Year 2013-2014

HEALTH PROCEDURES

Miss Popovich

Name …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Date ……………………………………

Introduction:

Throughout your lifetime you will visit physicians and other health professionals whose job is to keep you healthy and diagnose problems when they occur. You are familiar with getting a physical exam and getting vaccines. There may also be other procedures that you have experienced, such as MRIs, CAT scans, or surgeries. The health care field has many branches and many diagnostic tools. When you go into a hospital because you are sick or injured, doctors may order a variety of tests to determine the proper course of treatment and procedures to help you get better.

In this final exam project, you are going to choose any health procedure and teach the class about it.

You may choose a procedure you are familiar with, you or someone you know have had, or find one that is just interesting to you. Some examples are:

Cardiac Stress test

CAT scans

Cataract surgery

Chemotherapy

Colonoscopy

EEG

EKG

Gallbladder surgery

 Kidney dialysis

 Specific Organ transplant surgery

 Specific Prenatal Testing

 Tonsillectomy

 Third molar extraction/Surgical removal

 Angioplasty and Stenting

 Carotid Endarterectomy

 Endoscopic Vein Surgery

 Endovascular Stent Graft

Your choice is not limited to the above list of examples, but the topic must be approved by the date specified in Step One.

STEP ONE: Choose your Topic Approval ____________________

The Topic I chose was: …………………………………………………………………………………….

Your project is to be done individually. If you don’t have any idea of the procedures available, check out the list of medical procedures performed at these hospitals. You do not have to pick one from these lists, but it can help you get started. YOUR TOPIC MUST BE APPROVED ON OR BEFORE Thursday, December 19 th . http://www.shands.org/hospitals/uf/

 write procedures performed at Shands in search box http://orlandohealth.com/orlandoregionalmedicalcenter/Index.aspx

 click on Medical Specialties http://www.floridahospital.com/

 click on Featured Programs http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/strong-memorial.aspx

STEP TWO: Research

You will need to research your chosen procedure carefully to help set up your presentation. DO NOT just copy and paste information from a hospital website. The two websites below are reputable websites for health information. If you choose a website randomly from Google or another search engine, be sure to research the author to be sure it is “good” (factual) information. If you are struggling with this, you can ask a librarian to confirm validity of sources. http://health.nih.gov/

Scroll down the page and click on Procedures http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/medlineplus.html

There are three main sections to your research. All sections must be included and obvious to your audience. You may add any additional information that you feel appropriate; the questions in each section are guidelines to help organize your information.

1.

Analysis of health problem

 What Body System(s) would this procedure affect?

 Why would a person need this procedure?

 What health problem does it solve or prevent?

 What would happen if you needed this procedure and didn’t have access to it?

 Is there a specific group that usually has this procedure done (children, teens, the elderly, etc)?

Is the procedure for diagnostic reasons?

Is the procedure used to treat a problem?

Is the procedure to cure a disease or condition?

2.

Description of the procedure

 Where the procedure is performed (physician’s office, same day surgery center, hospital, etc)

 Who or what team performs the procedure (general practitioner, physician’s assistant, nurse, technician, surgeon)

 What equipment is needed?

 What preparation does the patient need to go through?

 What are the risks of the procedure?

What is the likely outcome or prognosis?

Are there any common alternatives to this procedure?

3.

Personal accounts (these may come from teachers, family, friends, or accounts on-line)

How does it feel to get this done, is it painful or uncomfortable, is it embarrassing, etc?

What can be done to make this procedure easier on a person?

Is this a procedure that will improve a person’s life?

Is this procedure something that you would encourage a person to do?

How would you convince someone in your family or a friend to get this procedure done? What research is there to support your belief?
