Objectives and Expectations of the Fellowship in “Medical Education and Knowledge Translation in Perioperative Medicine and Anesthesiology” Department of Anesthesia, University of Ottawa, Canada Supervision: Dr. Boet, MD, PhD Goals & Objectives The purpose of the Anesthesia Research Fellowship Program is to train AnesthesiologistResearchers who will become leaders in Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Research. This Fellowship Program involves a minimum of one year in duration, with ideally a two-year commitment. This will be achieved by: 1. Working with the Fellow to develop a Research plan that addresses his or her professional goals in academic Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, with a strong focus on Research – be it methodological research, clinical research, or education research; 2. Providing training in Research through a combination of didactic study, research practice, and intensive individual mentorship in research methods and dissemination, including publication; o Engagement into a Masters or PhD program is encouraged; 3. Providing experience in study design, statistical analysis and/or qualitative analysis, project management, and grant writing; 4. Integrating the Fellows into the activities of an academic Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Competencies upon Fellowship Completion Upon completion of the Research Fellowship, the Fellow will be able to: 1. Design, conduct, and manage an independent research project; 2. Successfully compete for extramural research funding; 3. Serve as a clinician-researcher in an academic Anesthesia Department. Expectations during the Fellowship The Research Fellow will be expected to achieve several deliverables within his/her Fellowship year. Progress will be assessed every 3 months in order to provide specific guidance and adjustment of the work, if necessary. The Fellow is expected to formulate and conduct at least three, and preferably four, research projects, from the idea to publication, during each fellowship year. The specific expectations from the Research Fellow are: 1. To familiarize him/herself with the environment during the first month of the Fellowship, set a research plan, and determine the specific projects in collaboration with Dr. Boet; 2. To acquire basic knowledge of protocol development, including literature search techniques for online databases, research design, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results; 3. To participate on an interdisciplinary research team, and successfully implement studies; 4. To identify funding opportunities, and develop grant writing skills; 5. To write up study results, and/or review articles for publication, and to disseminate findings through poster and podium presentations. A minimum of three submissions for publication, and preferably four, is expected during each year of the Fellowship. Publications will be full papers submitted to peerreviewed journals indexed in Pubmed.
