Although the lesson specifically identifies this as a grade 1 lesson, teachers can use this as a lesson to model the writing process. Teachers will also need to enhance lessons in order to explicitly address the kindergarten standards (e.g. use questioning that focuses on identifying literary elements or to recall sequence of events in the story). Depending on the students level of writing ability, students might need scaffolding support where they write their own story using the story map. 3 2 2 2 This video library features 12 half-hour videos that focus on the primary grade classroom. Teachers highlighted on video demonstrate various reading strategies. A few of the videos focus on the classroom where ELL students make-up the classroom population. Videos can be used as part of a grade level’s professional development session to begin discussion on best practices. n/a 3 This resource focuses on listening comprehension based on non-fiction texts and completing a performance task related to plants and gardening. Students write an expository report/book on what they learned during the unit on plants. Performance tasks play a key role in high stakes testing so this is a great exposure for students. Explicit directions make it easy for teachers to implement this integrated unit. 3 3 3 This is an activity to help children develop visual recognition of basic sight word vocabulary at the kindergarten Dolch sight word level ( I, am, can, like, it, is). This simple, quick activity uses the power Point program to display sight words in context.. Students are then asked to write down the words in their journals. Lesson has students reading sight word in context first. Sight word might need to be explicitly taught prior to presentation on Power Point to ensure students recognize the focus sight word. Teachers can use the format and write their own sentences that utilize the focus sight word on a board and have students follow the same instructional sequence. 2 2 2 Conversations, Questions, and Answers for a Beginning Teacher (see below) Multiple ELA standards Resource is an article that talks about how a Kindergarten teacher begins her career with support.
