Conference Background Accessible Arts is making a significant contribution to the national and international conversation, debate and policy development in arts and disability through the delivery of the Arts Activated Conference. The biennial conference has established itself as the must attend event for those interested in inclusive arts and disability programs. The theme for Arts Activated 2014 is ‘Creating Connections’, presenting a program that encourages interaction in the arts and disability sector. This conference offers a unique opportunity for Arts and Disability professionals to come together, share ideas and create stronger partnerships whilst being inspired by a diverse range of nationally and internationally recognised experts in the fields. Jo Verrant is a consultant, creator and trainer who has worked with many of the UK's leading strategic bodies within the creative and cultural sector. She works across sectors at both a front line and a strategic level with individuals, teams and organisations, including national agencies such as Creative Scotland and Arts Council England. Most recently she has become the Senior Producer for Unlimited, a £1.5 million commissions programme for disabled artists to make work, and has just been appointed to Arts Council England’s North Area Council. Jo has produced numerous activities, including performances, programmes, festivals and tours, and her pragmatic approach is based on her own experience of being hearing impaired since the age of twelve. Marcus Dickey Horley is the Curator of Access and Special Projects at both the Tate Modern and Tate Britain in London. Working within the Public Programs team, Marcus creates and delivers a program of events for a diverse range of audiences. Such projects include touch tours for blind visitors, sign language tours for deaf visitors and audience development events for visitors with learning disabilities and mobility impairments, taking place across the galleries, Auditorium, Seminar Room and Studio spaces. Disability Leadership Co-curated with Arts Access Australia This stream explores leadership in the disability sector with presenters exploring how their disability influenced their art form and creation of partnerships. Access Through Technology This stream will explore what impact has technology has had for people with disability, both accessing art and providing their art to the wider community. Community Connections This stream will feature projects and initiatives that have nurtured relationships within the community, some straight forward and others not so straightforward. Creative Practice Showcasing a range of projects from across the country, this stream will highlight the stories of individuals and organisations who are actively advocating for inclusion in the sector. Featured Sessions NDIS This session will hear from two organisations and their response to the scheme, from a trial site in central New South Wales to the preparation and readiness in regional Victoria. Power of Policy In this feature session, we will hear from Australia Council for the Arts on current trends and initiatives in the arts and disability sector. NSW Trade & Investment: Arts NSW will present the results on the 2-year Arts and Disability Partnership. Creative Connections This panel session will focus on and discuss the 2014 Conference theme: Creative Connections, where we will hear about different collaborations within the sector. Media Matters This session will explore how film, television and radio have influenced individual and community thinking about people with disability.
