Australia and overseas.
Arts Activated 2014 Conference
Accessible Arts presents the 2014 Arts Activated National Conference on Tuesday 28 –
Wednesday 29 October, at The Concourse, Chatswood, Sydney.
The leading arts and disability conference in Australia, Arts Activated showcases the
accomplishments of people with disability, as artists, leaders, audience and advocates,
alongside the collective efforts of their supporters. Across a two-day event, the Conference
provides the perfect opportunity to explore, debate, discuss, connect and galvanise the
growing culture of inclusive arts practice.
Conference Background
Accessible Arts is making a significant contribution to the national and international
conversation, debate and policy development in arts and disability through the delivery of the
Arts Activated Conference.
The biennial conference has established itself as the must attend event for those interested
in inclusive arts and disability programs. The theme for Arts Activated 2014 is ‘Creating
Connections’, presenting a program that encourages interaction in the arts and disability
sector.
This conference offers a unique opportunity for Arts and Disability professionals to come
together, share ideas and create stronger partnerships whilst being inspired by a diverse
range of nationally and internationally recognised experts in the fields. Conference sponsors
will gain exposure to a wide range of arts and disability professionals and will have the
chance to develop strong and lasting relationships.
About Accessible Arts
As the peak arts and disability organisation in New South Wales, Australia for over twenty
years, Accessible Arts advocates for inclusion, access and leadership opportunities for
people with disability to actively participate in the arts.
Fostering access initiatives in partnership with the Arts we aim to increase attendance by
people with disability at galleries, theatres, museums and festivals.
We support the professional development of emerging and professional artists with disability
across all art forms. Accessible Arts promotes equal opportunities in the visual and
performing arts for people with disability, as participants in public programs, workshops,
education and training.

Keynote Speakers
Jo Verrant,Senior Producer, Unlimited UK (left) and Marcus Dickey Horley,
Curator of Access and Special Projects, Tate Modern UK (right).
Jo Verrant is a consultant, creator and trainer who has worked with many of the UK's leading
strategic bodies within the creative and cultural sector. She works across sectors at both a
front line and a strategic level with individuals, teams and organisations, including national
agencies such as Creative Scotland and Arts Council England.
Most recently she has become the Senior Producer for Unlimited, a £1.5 million commissions
programme for disabled artists to make work, and has just been appointed to Arts Council
England’s North Area Council. Jo has produced numerous activities, including performances,
programmes, festivals and tours, and her pragmatic approach is based on her own
experience of being hearing impaired since the age of twelve.
Marcus Dickey Horley is the Curator of Access and Special Projects at both the Tate Modern
and Tate Britain in London. Working within the Public Programs team, Marcus creates and
delivers a program of events for a diverse range of audiences.
Such projects include touch tours for blind visitors, sign language tours for deaf visitors and
audience development events for visitors with learning disabilities and mobility impairments,
taking place across the galleries, Auditorium, Seminar Room and Studio spaces.

In this stream we will hear about person-centred access projects run by leading national
venues, organisations and individuals.
Disability Leadership
Co-curated with Arts Access Australia
This stream explores leadership in the disability sector with presenters exploring how their
disability influenced their art form and creation of partnerships.
Access Through Technology
This stream will explore what impact has technology has had for people with disability, both
accessing art and providing their art to the wider community.
Community Connections
This stream will feature projects and initiatives that have nurtured relationships within the
community, some straight forward and others not so straightforward.
Creative Practice
Showcasing a range of projects from across the country, this stream will highlight the stories of
individuals and organisations who are actively advocating for inclusion in the sector.
Featured Sessions
NDIS
This session will hear from two organisations and their response to the scheme, from a trial
site in central New South Wales to the preparation and readiness in regional Victoria.
Power of Policy
In this feature session, we will hear from Australia Council for the Arts on current trends and
initiatives in the arts and disability sector. NSW Trade & Investment: Arts NSW will present the
results on the 2-year Arts and Disability Partnership.
Creative Connections
This panel session will focus on and discuss the 2014 Conference theme: Creative
Connections, where we will hear about different collaborations within the sector.
Media Matters
This session will explore how film, television and radio have influenced individual and
community thinking about people with disability.
Networking Breakfast
A facilitated networking breakfast will be held at the Conference venue from 7.30 – 8.30am on
Wednesday 29 October.

Cultural Program
The Cultural Program is a series of curated events that will take place across Sydney and its
surrounding suburbs in October 2014, during the Arts Activated Conference week.
The Cultural Program events will be hosted by individual artists, arts venues and arts
organisations that promote inclusive arts and disability practice. The Program aim is to
advocate leadership and provide education and information for people with disability across
the arts and disability sector.

The Venue
The Concourse, Chatswood
The Concourse is the cultural home of Sydney’s North Shore. The venue incorporates a
concert hall, theatre, rehearsal and studio spaces, as well as providing conferencing facilities.
It has been designed to offer equity of access to all. The precinct has been designed to ensure
both patrons and performers have full access across the site.
Accessible design features include wheelchair access to all venues and stages, service desks
and back-of-house facilities. The site incorporates Braille, tactile indicators and design
elements ensure people with visual impairments can traverse the site with ease. Assisted
Listening Systems are offered in the Theatre, concert Hall, foyer and bar areas.
The Location
Situated 8.5 kilometres north of Sydney’s CBD, Chatswood is an extremely diverse, energetic,
historic and beautiful city. The City is renowned as one of Australia’s top retail destinations
with more than 200 000 square metres of retail therapy on offer and more than 20 million
shoppers annually. Chatswood is home to designer fashions and homeware at Chatswood
Chase, a multitude of choices in Westfield Chatswood and unique and boutique stores in the
Lemon Grove Shopping Centre, Mandarin Centre, on The Concourse and throughout the
streets and mall.

A trade exhibition will be held for the duration of the Conference within the Level 2 Foyer, and
companies are invited to use this opportunity to promote their products and services to
Conference delegates. This is an excellent way to communicate key messages to potential

Conference venue with session rooms and catering in close proximity, to provide maximum

Inclusion of sponsor/exhibitor logo in marketing/promotional material is subject to confirmation of
sponsorship prior to design and print deadlines. The sponsor is required to provide logo in highresolution files compatible for large print.
Provision of delegate lists to sponsors/exhibitors is in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act,
excluding any delegates who have elected to withhold their details.
Goods & Services Tax (GST) is applicable to all goods and services offered by Arts Activated 2014
Conference and all prices in this document are inclusive of the GST. GST is calculated at the date
of publication of this document. All monies are payable in Australian dollars.
No sponsor/exhibitor shall assign, sublet or apportion the whole or any part of their sponsorship or
exhibition package except upon prior written consent of the Conference Convenor.
A sponsorship or exhibition booking is considered confirmed once a completed booking form has
been received by the Development Manager and a return letter of confirmation has been provided,
together with a tax invoice for the required full payment. Full payment is required for the delivery of
any and all entitlements associated with a sponsorship or exhibition booking.
The Arts Activated 2014 Conference delegate list may be used by sponsors and exhibitors up to
and not beyond 31 December 2014. The list is not to be used in conjunction with any other nonrelated conference matters nor is the list to be used for future organisation event marketing.
Public Liability insurance to a minimum of A$10 million must be taken out by each exhibitor at their
own expense. A copy of the organisation’s public and product liability certificate must be submitted
to the Conference Convenor at the time of submitting their booking form.

Accessible Arts reserve the right to rearrange the floor plan/relocate any exhibit without notice.
In the event of cancellation, a service fee of 50% of total fees applies for cancellations prior to
1 August 2014. No refunds will be made for cancellations after this date and full payment will be
required. Should a cancellation be made prior to payment being made, the appropriate cancellation
fee will be applicable and the Accessible Arts will issue an invoice which will be payable within
seven (7) days. After Sponsorship has been confirmed and accepted, a reduction in Sponsorship
is considered a cancellation and will be governed by the above cancellation policy.
