MUMPS UPDATE
Bradley University Health Services is closely monitoring the outbreak of mumps in the state of Illinois.
Currently, as of Sept. 25th, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting 229 cases of mumps
statewide, with the majority of cases linked to the outbreak at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign as well as cases at Illinois State University. Peoria County currently has no reported cases of
mumps.
Mumps is an acute viral illness that most often causes swelling and tenderness of the salivary glands in
the cheeks and jaw. Symptoms generally start with headaches, body aches, low grade fever, decreased
appetite and fatigue. Swelling in the cheeks from the ear to the jaw generally develops within 48 hours
of initial symptoms. More severe symptoms may develop including swelling of the testicles in males, or
inflammation of the ovaries or breasts in females.
The mumps virus is transmitted by saliva and drainage from nose and can spread by coughing, sneezing,
or kissing. Sharing items such as cups or eating utensils can spread the disease.
