Leadership Legacy Scholarship for Graduates
In 2007 WTS launched the Leadership Legacy Scholarship. WTS awards an outstanding
young woman pursuing graduate studies towards a career in transportation or a related field,
and who demonstrates a specific interest in advancing transportation innovation in the
international arena. This “rotating” scholarship takes the name of the current WTS International
Chair Karen Schilling who is serving from 2012 through 2014.
Through the Leadership Legacy Scholarship, WTS seeks to motivate and reward women who
demonstrate leadership in the transportation industry to bring ideas, innovation and new
approaches to transportation challenges in the United States and beyond. For this year's award,
focus is on women who demonstrate leadership in bringing ideas, innovation and new
approaches to transportation challenges in the US and beyond. It includes candidates who
have a specific interest in addressing the impact of transportation on sustainability, land use,
environmental impact, security and quality of life issues affecting communities around the globe.
The Leadership Legacy Scholarship is in the amount of $3,500. The minimum criteria for
selection are as follows:

Open to women
GPA of 3.0 or higher
Currently an Oregon or Southwest Washington resident1
Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in a transportation-related field such as
transportation engineering, planning, finance, or logistics
e. Plans to pursue a career in a transportation-related field
f. Not previously awarded a WTS scholarship
The scholarship is competitive and based on the applicant's specific transportation goals,
academic record, and transportation-related activities or job skills. Minority candidates are
encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted to the WTS Portland Chapter. Return the
completed application and required attachments and information as noted on the application to:

October 24, 2012. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Applications are not
returned to applicants.

For purposes of the WTS Portland Scholarship, residency includes Oregon or Southwest Washington residents who have moved
out of the area only for the specific purpose of attending college and intend to make Oregon or Southwest Washington their
permanent home.

IV. Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation by a professor or job supervisor
and community service program coordinator/director must accompany your application.
V. Personal Statement: A statement about your career goals after graduation and why
you think that you should receive the scholarship award should be attached to the
application form. Applicants must address their personal vision of how their education
will equip them to better serve their community’s needs and transportation problems.
The statement should not exceed 1000 words or two pages.
VI. Proof of Enrollment: Attach a copy of your tuition receipt or current registration
card.
VII. Official Transcripts: Include official transcripts from all colleges and universities
attended.
