The 2013 John H. “Jack” Snyder Community Service Award Established 11/16/2005 About the award The John H. “Jack” Snyder Community Service Award recognizes agencies and organizations that provide outstanding new and innovative recreation and park services to persons with disabilities. The purpose of the award is to recognize those organizations that are providing high quality services and to encourage others to follow these examples. Advocating for the provision of recreation and park services to all citizens of the Commonwealth including those with special needs is a high priority for the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society. The award is given annually at the Annual PRPS State Conference and includes a scholarship for a staff member involved with the recreation programs to attend the annual conference. The major portion of the funding for this award is provided by a special fund established for this purpose by Jack Snyder. About Jack Snyder This award honors John H. “Jack” Snyder who spent a lifetime advocating for the rights and services for persons with disabilities. He served as the Governor’s Advocate for the Physically Handicapped under Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp. He was a cofounder of the Pennsylvania Therapeutic Recreation Institute and encouraged a team of other advocates and professionals. He served as President of the PA Therapeutic Recreation Society and as the President of the PA Recreation and Park Society, and used these offices to further the cause of persons with disabilities. Even through his retirement years, he returned often to the Annual PA Therapeutic Recreation Institute to share his thoughts and insights with younger professionals. This award will carry on Jack’s legacy of advocacy. Criteria for the award 1. A recreation and park agency or organization or other community based organization that provides high quality recreation services to persons with disabilities on an ongoing basis. 2. Recreation and park services may include a recreation program, a recreation facility such as a swimming pool, or a park area adapted for special needs. 3. The organization must document that the program or facility is utilized by persons with disabilities, and receives good reviews through an evaluation process. 4. The program or facility being included for the award must be new within the last five years. Additionally, programs and facilities that provide innovative approaches to the provision of services will receive preference in the award selection process. 5. Programs must be conducted in facilities that are handicapped accessible. Application process 2013 Application Deadline: Friday, March 1, 2013 2013 Award decision by Friday, Marcy 15, 2013 Award presentation The 2013 presentation of the award will be made at the at the annual PRPS State Conference in Hershey on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 The recipient organization will be invited to send a staff member who works with the recreation services to attend the conference on the conference scholarship which will cover registration, meals, and lodging. A description of the award winning program or facility will be distributed during the Awards Banquet. The winning organization will be invited to set-up an educational display during the State Conference to further educate others about the program or facility. Photographs and details of the award will be published annually in the PRPS magazine, Pennsylvania Recreation & Parks.
