When I was waiting for results I took a first-year electronic course at a local institute. My interest in learning new things and trying to express it back in a meaningful way seemed only logical that I pursue a career in technology field. When I began my undergraduate career reading for B.Sc. (Hons) in Management and Information Technology, I had the opportunity to be exposed to an array of Computer courses, all of which tended to reinforce and solidify my intense interest in electronics and Computer Science. My cultivated interest and love for computer science proved with nine ‘A’s of IT stream subjects out of fifteen, despite the eight ‘A’s out of eighteen subjects in management stream. After completion of my four year undergraduate degree with second class upper division honours, my plan was to move directly into graduate work toward masters in science. In the realm of Computing, I have developed a special interest in the field of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining and have even been researching the usage of data miming in a semantic web. This infiltrated me a special interest for my MSc which I read titled “Investigating data mining and connection mining, for competitor monitoring in the pharmaceuticals industry” a research awarded a distinction from the University of Hertfordshire. Another particular interest of mine was Management Information Systems, which I could publish several international papers on my undergraduate research. After the obtaining the first degree I worked as an assistant lecturer, because my thirst for learning new things hasn’t been quenched even after the graduation of an IT degree. Doing technology based research was one of my fascinations for choosing an academic carrier at the Department of Industrial Management in University of Kelaniya, apart from teaching. While my stay I assisted technology transfer research project where I also accrued knowledge about the industry and software products by assisting the project. I also got sound knowledge of programming and database administration through wonderful teaching experience. Then I joined then newly established Uva Wellassa University as a Lecturer in view of the ample opportunities ahead in the brand new environment and experience. I assisted in formation of the computer laboratory, where I learnt many practical applications, especially in networking and trouble shooting and lab management. I also taught many software programming languages such as C, VB.Net and Java as well as databases and data structures and algorithms. I also handled a course unit, Software Engineering and Quality Assurance, which involved delivering lecturers, marking tutorials, handling practical classes, setting examination papers and also paper marking. In this cause unit I could steer students to bring 4 about software solutions for current issues in the industry as software projects. At my stay in Uva Wellassa University I also attended staff meetings and assisted decision making for the existing matters and challenges for the University. Better opportunities to progress coming on my way, I decided to accept the offer from the Engineering faculty of the University of Ruhuna. I was able to supervise inspire the undergraduates incorporating programming aspects for the robotics. While studying for the M.Sc. degree, I was able to assist numerous students by providing one to one tutoring for their GCSE, AS,AL and Undergraduates to achieve their fullest potential in their studies. I was inspired to apply for the teaching position as many of the tutees have recommended my teaching methods to be effective in class room environment. It is in researching and teaching that I believe I can make the greatest contribution, utilizing my theoretical background and creativity as well as the ability in inspiring students as a lecturer. 5 RESUME 6 Priyanthi Manjula Dassanayake B.Sc.(Hons), M.Sc. Therefore drug companies are combating each other to develop multibillion dollar drugs each year to survive. Parallel research is done in various pharmaceutical companies once a clinical path is being discovered and this requires intensive competitor monitoring procedure. To monitor competitors, we propose three component based approach namely, factors, actors and predictors. We identify the factors which are the keywords related to the project and their visitor using crawlers and wrappers and we use user centric panels to discover the actors which are potential or existing competitors. A graph structure will be formulated against the keywords and the sequence of access per identified competitor, formulating a sequential pattern. And also the frequency of access will be added to the link’s weight illustrating the significance of the keyword for a competitor. This graphic structure can be used for pattern recognition the predictors, which is using transition matrices and Markov chains to link prediction. These three components will indicate the direction of the individual competitors, performance of the competitors collectively and keyword based relation to aid the actual desired solution. And finally the ability to improve the structure will be discussed by replacing the nodes structure with reusable components of machine learning neural networks and artificial intelligent agents. 16
