Reminders: RtA secure passages will measure standards mastery over time (instead of an EOG-style snapshot) and is not designed to be used as a classroom grade. However, teachers may want to enter the number of questions answered correctly into their PowerSchool grade book (with no points assigned) as a method of communication for parents. Always record the date each secure passage is taken and enter the number of questions answered correctly—(5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, or leave blank if not taken)—if you are using the district RtA Secure Passage Roster for maintaining records. NOTES from the RtA Portfolio Guide: • no more than three passages will be administered each week. • each administration date must be recorded on the actual passage and on the recording sheet. • assessments must be conducted in an untimed classroom setting, scored by the primary reading teacher, and all materials must be stored securely. • passages may not be completed as a homework assignment or outside of the classroom (only students who have an accommodation for separate room may complete the portfolios outside of the classroom setting). • passages must be administered as a “cold read,” meaning that a student sees the passage for the first time, reads the passage, and answers the questions independently. • at no time may the teacher or another individual read a portfolio passage to the student, assist students with individual words, interpret meanings of words or provide any additional assistance that would support the student independently reading the passage and completing the questions.
