Smart City Expo & World Congress 2012 will bring
together over 200 experts in urban transformation
Cities will be at the centre of attention of world development in the next few decades and the
majority of the planet’s inhabitants will be living in them. As new cities are built and existing ones
are transformed, it will be a key aspect in the future of humanity. In order to respond to this
challenge and tackle the main strategies to achieve a sustainable urban future, Smart City Expo &
World Congress, the leading European event on smart cities, will bring together urban experts from
around the world and the most revolutionary thinkers.
In order to tackle this challenge, cities will have to be transformed in order to integrate larger
populations and manage existing resources, guaranteeing quality of life of their inhabitants and
driving economic development. This involves combining the ideas, resources and tools of mobility,
ICTs, the environment, energy efficiency, town planning, knowledge economy and demographic
management.
The second Smart City Expo & World Congress, which will highlight technology and sustainability, will
reflect this diversity of disciplines in its congress programme that will be structured around 9 topics:
Energy, Environment, Innovation & Technology, Collaborative City & the Smart Society, Town
Planning, Mobility, Economy & Governance, Emergency & Security, Smart GEO; the latter two are
new to this year’s programme.
The list of over 200 keynote speakers includes Kenneth Berlin, lawyer specialising in the
environment and advisor on the subject to US President Barack Obama; Carlo Ratti, Director of the
SENSEable City Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Aaron Renn, analyst and Principal of
the urban studies studio The Urbanophile; Dan Hill, coordinator in design of the Finesa Foundation
for Innovation, Sitra; Charles Landry, economist specialising in urban development and founder of
Comedia; Robert Puentes, specialist in infrastructures and urban mobility at the Brookings
Institution, New York; Thomas Barrett, Director of technical services and financial advice at the
European Investment Bank; John Moore, analyst and founder of Government in the Lab; and Ricky
Burdett, urbanist and professor at the London School of Economics. (See full list of confirmed

The second Smart City Expo & World Congress will be held from the 13th to 15th November 2012 in
the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via Exhibition Centre. In its first year, it brought together over 6,000
visitors from 51 countries, 118 companies and over 200 international speakers making it one of the
leading world events on smart cities and sustainable urban development.
