Clean coal technology, alternative energy, global warming Clean coal technologies As the attention has shifted more and more to global warming and the affect human actions are having on our planet, there has emerged a need to find safer and less damaging alternative energy solutions. This is where clean coal technology comes in. Coal is widely believed to be a dirty fossil fuel, which contributes heavily to the climate change crisis. Clean coal technology, however, is starting to change this by introducing various innovative techniques and methods when it comes to coal burning. The importance of coal in today’s industrialised world should not be underestimated in the least, as it still generates more than half of the entire US’s population’s electricity alone. This is why it is crucial to continuously invest in the development and production of clean coal technology. Interesting facts about Clean Coal Technology Coal produces more than 25% of the world’s energy, and is responsible for more than 75% of Australia’s greenhouse emissions. This carbon emissions figure can be drastically slashed if Clean Coal Technology is implemented. Clean coal technologies refers to a range of cleaner coal solutions, such as “coal washing” (this involves the grinding of coal into smaller pieces, which will eventually pass through a process called gravity separation). Clean coal often refers to carbon capture and storage (CSS), where CO2 emissions are pumped and stored underground. Cleaning coal isn’t necessarily a cheap solution – but electricity suppliers will need to invest in these technologies if they want to curb carbon emissions. Coal gasification plants are preferred by some industry experts as they are more flexible and offer higher levels of efficiency. Gas derived from coal gasification plants can either be used to power electricity generators, or be used elsewhere for instance in the chemical or transportation industry. The Fossil Fuel Foundation of Africa The Fossil Fuel Foundation of Africa was founded in 1994, and aims to provide a forum to serve the multidisciplinary communities working in all aspects of the coal, carbon and energy worlds. It goes about doing this by presenting the Annual Southern African Coal Science and Technology Conference, as well as through various trade publications, conferences, events and courses offered.
