Textron Systems Awarded $108M Contract for Sensor Fuzed Weapon Production
Wilmington, MA - March 8, 2006 – Textron Systems announced today that it has been awarded a $108 million
contract by the U.S. Air Force for its Fiscal Year 2006 procurement of the Sensor Fuzed Weapon. The three-year
contract is part of an on-going Long Term Pricing Agreement (LTPA). Overall, Textron Systems will deliver
approximately 6,500 SFWs to the USAF by the end of 2013.
Sensor Fuzed Weapon is a smart, air-to-ground, direct attack munition that can detect and defeat a wide variety of
combat targets. Combat proven initially on April 2, 2003 in Operation Iraqi Freedom, the SFW received world-wide
recognition after defeating multiple Iraqi tanks in a single aircraft pass that halted an Iraqi armored column from
advancing on U.S. military forces. Subsequent operations confirmed the high military value of this unique weapon.
Sensor Fuzed Weapon first entered full rate production in 1996. A Pre-Planned Product Improvement (P3I) Program
enhanced the weapon's capability, and placed it into production in 2001. Textron Systems marked its first
international sale of the SFW in 2004.
Tom Harrington, vice president for airborne products, Textron Systems said, "Sensor Fuzed Weapon was proven
successful time and again in operations in Iraq. First hand accounts from troops on the ground and in the air attest to
the accuracy, versatility and sheer power of this smart area munition. We remain committed to providing our
customers with the capabilities needed to ensure mission success against current and continually evolving threats."
About the Sensor Fuzed Weapon
Known as CBU-97 and CBU-105, Textron Systems' Sensor Fuzed Weapon is the first and only combat-proven smart
area weapon of its kind in U.S. Air Force inventory designed to accurately detect and defeat multiple stationary or
moving land threat targets. SFW's demonstrated lethality against armor makes CBU-105 an important forcemultiplying capability for the warfighter. Its 40 smart Skeet warheads have both a hard and soft target capability and
are equipped with two self-destruct modes and a self-neutralization feature to leave no hazardous unexploded
ordnance on the ground, resulting in a clean battlefield.
