Assistant Principal – Business

Development & Partnerships

£55,000 per annum (plus £5,000 performance related bonus), 37 Hours, Permanent, Ref: 5562

Sunderland College is one of the largest and most successful colleges in England. It operates from five major centres spread across the city of Sunderland. It has over

5,000 full time and 12,000 part time students including almost 1,000 Higher

Education students. The Colle ge has an annual budget of over £40 million and is in robust financial health.

The College wishes to appoint an Assistant Principal to devise and implement strategies to meet the College’s long-term ambitions to penetrate a wide range of business and international markets. This post is key in enabling this strategic aspiration to be realised and is thus a post of particularly high importance to the

College.

The successful candidate will have significant demonstrable experience of successful business development and a proven track record in maintaining business links. They will also have good recent knowledge and experience of International education markets. You will need to have the ability to motivate, inspire, network and lead a business development team. Strategy and growth of the College’s external business development, employer engagement and international activities

Main duties:

1. Main Duties

1.1. Contribute to development and achievement of the college strategic plan with particular reference to business development, employer engagement, partnership and international activity.

1.2. Develop, implement, review and evaluate the College’s Business, Employer,

International partnership.

2. Business/Employers

2.1. Grow and develop corporate and employer engagement activity.

2.2. Oversee and manage the business development teams to ensure targets are achieved.

2.3. Oversee the management of the colleges Customer Relationship

Management System ensuring that accurate and valid data informs business development strategy and activity.

2.4. Undertake networking activity to grow the business and represent the college at external forums.

2.5. Liaise with college departments to maximise employer focused opportunities to include apprenticeships (course delivery) and other curriculum enriching activities.

2.6. To develop key business contacts with major employers.

2.7. To promote innovation and business enterprises activity.

2.8. To ensure the college activity is aligned to the priorities of the Department for

Business Innovation & Skills and other relevant Government Departments.

3. Partnerships

3.1. Proactively develop and improve strategic partnerships.

3.2. Manage sub-contracting activity.

3.3. Maintain a strong external orientation, proactively seeking opportunities to engage with business, employees and other stakeholders.

3.4. Proactively seek funding opportunities and ensure that funding targets are achieved.

4. International Activity

4.1. Network with international agents to recruit students to study in the UK.

4.2. Manage international partnerships and corporate activity with agents, colleges and other stakeholders.

4.3. Oversee licences and validations with the UK Border Agencies, British

Council and other regulatory bodies.

4.4. Manage through the international team in-country delivering where it meets the colleges specified priorities.

4.5. Ensure the college is well placed strategically to manage and grow IELTS testing provision.

4.6. Manage the college’s relationship with the British Council and attract funding where projects align to the college strategies.

4.7. To produce an annual plan of overseas travel aligned to the strategy to ensure delivery of quality outcomes and financial targets and to undertake such travel.

4.8. To show and develop the colleges international business portfolio.

5. Marketing & Communication

5.1. Strategically manage the colleges markets and communication activity to achieve targets.

5.2. Improve the college profile regionally particularly in relation to each of its target markets.

5.3. Ensure college departments capitalise on market and business intelligence data.

5.4. Seek opportunities for innovation, ensuring that business development activity is informed by the needs of industry and regional priorities.

6. General

6.1. To operate viably meeting agreed targets and to ensure that funding targets set are achieved.

6.2. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills relevant to role and to ensure knowledge and skills are disseminated with colleagues and curriculum staff.

6.3. Participate in the College’s Continuous Professional Development.

6.4. Any other appropriate duties as requested by your line manager.

6.5. Preparing reports/presentations for Board of Corporation & Committees

6.6. Take appropriate responsibility for the safeguarding and promotion of welfare of children and/or vulnerable adults.

Skills/Knowledge/Aptitude

Demonstrable knowledge of business intelligence and growing sectors

Up to date knowledge of a range of international markets

Recent experience of overseas travel in pursuit of business development

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT

Knowledge of the Further Education curriculum and its application to employer engagement and business development

Proven ability to be effective in business development:-

presenting new business proposals to prospective employers

leading business proposal efforts

writing winning proposals

An entrepreneurial and innovative approach to business growth

Demonstrable experience of increasing and maintaining business from employers









Ability to demonstrate outstanding leadership and management of performance

Recent knowledge of UK border agency rules and registration processes

Experience of successful recent management of international work

Recent experience of marketing and a good knowledge of two overseas markets and FE Business markets
