INSTRUCTIONS FOR URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
Urinary tract infections can be either KIDNEY or URINARY BLADDER infections. Most
of the time, kidney infections are more serious, and maybe more symptomatic: if
symptoms are getting worse, do not ignore this or delay further medical attention.
1. Take medicine(s) as prescribed by the physician until finished. If infection or
symptoms are not getting any better, especially within 72 ~ours (3 days), then
contact us at NORTHERN CARE (either in Gaylord or Grayling).
2. Increase fluid (clear) intake as much as possible. The fluids that are appropriate
are water, juices, and especially cranberry juice, and regular tea. Carbonated
drinks and alcohol are not good at this time.
3. For women, it is better to wear cotton underwear, if they have a urine infection.
Also drink fluids and empty bladder before and after intercourse.
4. If you have blood in the urine, watch out for increased bleeding. It will also help to
prevent increased bleeding for the patient to take it easy and rest as much as
possible in horizontal or reclining position. If bleeding increases, call us at
NORTHERN CARE or go to the Emergency Room.
5. If you develop persistent or recurrent fever or chills which is not helped by
Tylenol or aspirin or Ibuprofen, contact us at NORTHERN CARE or call the
Emergency Room. This can mean that the infection is getting worse or the
medicines prescribed to you are not working.
6. Please return to the NORTHERN CARE CLINIC, after you finish the antibiotics,
(or to your regular physician), to have your urine re-examined to make sure the
infection is gone.
