WAIKATO SECONDARY SCHOOLS | DIVISION 1 | RULES
Refer to Playing Conditions and Codes of Conduct for The Gillette Cup. In summary:
 50 over format
 Playing hours between 10.00am - 5.30pm
 One interval of not exceeding 30 minutes between innings (by negotiation)
 3 hours 20 minutes for team fielding first to complete innings
 Each team must have a minimum of 20 overs to complete a match
 Ten overs maximum per bowler (or 1/5th of total number overs)
 Note the following formula where match has been interrupted
The requirements, following a delay, will be calculated by Duckworth-Lewis (via CricHQ). Where
CricHQ and Duckworth-Lewis are unavailable, the following rain-rule will be used to calculate the
new total.
1. A BASE SCORE will be calculated by dividing the first innings total, by the total overs
available in the first innings.
i.e.
If ‘Team A’ are dismissed for 134, after 34 of their 50 available overs, the base
score will be calculated by 134 divided by 50. If the first innings is limited to 43 overs, the
total will be divided by 43.
2. The BASE SCORE will be added to the REDUCED OVERS CALCULATION. This is found by
multiplying the BASE SCORE by 0.01, which is then multiplied by the overs lost (found by
subtracting the overs available in the second innings, from the overs available in the first
innings).
i.e.
If ‘Team B’ has their innings reduced from 50 to 37 overs after rain delays the start
of the second innings, the REDUCED OVERS CALCULATION will be found by:
BASE SCORE [times] 0.01 [times] 13 [equals] REDUCED OVERS CALCULATION
3. The BASE SCORE is added to the REDUCED OVERS CALCULATION, and rounded up to the
next whole number to find the TARGET.
i.e.
If ‘Team A’ scores 134, with 50 overs available, and ‘Team B’ has their innings
reduced to 37 overs, the calculation will be:
99.16 + 12.8908 [99.16 x 0.01 x 13] = 112.0508, target [to win] is 113 in 37 overs
Note: this calculation remains the same if the delay is mid-way through the innings. This
must be recalculated after every rain delay. For overs lost, FOUR minutes lost equates to
ONE over lost, after the first FIFTEEN minutes lost.
If the match is not completed within the allocated time (by 5.30pm) then the rain rule will
be used to determine the winner, as the match stands at the close of play.
Use the below formula to double-check your calculation:
FIRST INNINGS SCORE = A
FIRST INNINGS OVERS AVAILABLE = B
SECOND INNINGS OVERS AVAILABLE = C
BASE SCORE = D
OVERS LOST = E
REDUCED OVERS CALCULATION = F
STEP ONE:
STEP TWO:
STEP THREE:
[A ÷ B] x C = D
[D x 0.01] x E = F
D + F = TARGET
The following are exceptions to the rules as provided for in the Gillette Cup Playing Conditions &
Codes of Conduct:
 New balls to be used. 4 piece balls are to be used by all teams in this competition
irrespective of the surface being played on. The home team must advise the opposition at
least two days in advance where the game will be played on a grassed pitch. Use only
Kookaburra branded balls.
 Non-front foot No Balls will apply to medium pace and fast bowlers only. We will allow
players in this Competition to bowl one short pitched delivery per over. Short pitched refers
to a ball rising to a height between the batsman’s shoulders and head in his normal standing
position. The umpire must clearly signal when the short-pitched delivery has been bowled. A
ball going over the head of the batsman remains a no ball. Instead of there being a penalty
of two runs there will only be a penalty of one run (plus whatever else is scored and the
additional ball). This applies to all no balls.
 Wides: Leg side wides will be balls deemed to have passed down the leg side by more than
200mm from the leg stump. If a ball signalled a wide crosses the boundary it will be scored
as a 5.
 Wicket Keepers: All wicket keepers must wear approved full-faced helmets when standing
up to the wickets.
 Batsmen: HCA recommends the use of helmets.
 Fielders: There will be no more than five fielders allowed on the leg side at any time, no
more than five outside the 25 metre circle at any time and no more than two behind square
on the leg side.
 Substitutes: The 12th man may be used as an interchange player at the discretion of the
Captain. He may be brought on to bowl (max. 10 overs) or bat (max. 11 batsmen).
 Results, if not live-scored via CricHQ, must be submitted to HCA by 6pm Sunday following
the game or risk losing your points. Results will be published on the HCA website
(www.hamiltoncricket.co.nz).
 Clothing: Neatness and uniformity are an essential requirement.
 Lunch: All home teams encouraged to provide a shared lunch. Opposition must be advised if
lunch will not be provided.
 Drinks: Players will not leave the field during the one drinks break and the break will be no
longer than three minutes.
 Home Venue: The final will be played at a neutral venue on a grass wicket if possible. If this
is not possible the team finishing with the most points leading up to the semi-finals will be
allocated a home venue, irrespective if it is a grass wicket or not.
 Scorebooks are to be scrupulously maintained with full names written and crosschecked by
both teams. Scorers should receive training in this to ensure accuracy. Prizes will be awarded
for most runs scored and most wickets taken during the Term 1 and term 4 competitions
including semi-finals and finals.
 Dead ball will be signalled if, in the opinion of the umpire, the ball has deviated off the edge
of an artificial pitch edge or similar cause. No run or Wide shall be credited.





In the first 15 overs there must be two stationary fieldsmen within ten metres of the
batsman at the instance of delivery.
Umpires: Teams are to encourage the use of player umpires.
Seven Player Rule: At commencement of play a minimum number of seven players are
required to be present in order to constitute a team.
Games are to be played on the Saturday allocated. In exceptional circumstances a change
could be considered. This would be on a case by case basis.
Rain Rule: Play will not commence in rain, and if players should leave the field after the start
of play because of rain, play will not recommence until the rain has stopped or both captains
agree to play on. There should not be any pressure placed on captains to continue playing in
rain. Player welfare must come first.
Points
The points received by each team shall be as follows:
Win
Tie
Abandoned
Loss
Default
4 points (this includes being on the receiving end of a default)
2 points each
2 points each
0 point
-2 points
Where teams have the same number of points in the first instance who beat who and then the net
run rate. The points table will be published on the HCA website Round 2 of the Competition.
When scores are tied in the semi-finals and final the winner shall be determined in the following
way:
 The team scoring more runs per wicket lost will advance.
 Where runs per wicket are equal, the team scoring its runs at a faster rate per over batted
will advance.
 If the scores are still equal there shall be a bowl-off. 11 players selected from each team, to
bowl one ball each alternatively, bowl at a set of stumps, only balls pitching before the
wickets and dislodging the bails will count. The winner will be the team that has hit the
wickets the most times.
 In the semi-finals if the match is abandoned without achieving the minimum overs to
complete a match (20 overs), the highest placed teams will progress to the finals.
 In the final, and after the reserve day, if the match is still abandoned without a ball bowled,
the highest placed team in the competition will be declared the winner. If the game has
commenced and then is abandoned, the winner will be found using the bowl-off rule.
Promotion - Relegation
The winning team of the 2A competition has the option of promotion to Division 1 if they wish. If
this option is taken the bottom place Division 1 team will be relegated to Division 2A. This
opportunity is to be given on a term by term basis.
Dave Hoskin Trophy
This trophy will be competed for in the same way as the Tri-colour trophy in Waikato schools rugby
(or Ranfurly Shield). This trophy will be competed for Home or Away and will be up for grabs in all
matches provided for in this Competition. Your team will have to defend the trophy in three matches
in order to get their name put on the trophy. The trophy will also be competed for in the final and
semi-final rounds.
