Some English Language Problems for Saudi Students
There are so many problems that face our Saudi students when they learn English
language. These problems are related to pronunciation, spelling, grammar and
vocabulary. Concerning pronunciation problems, some Saudi students don’t
pronounce /v/ and /p/ sounds. They face some difficulties in pronouncing some words
that contain these sounds and some other words that contain phonological sequential
constrains that do not exist in their own language phonological system in addition to
the sounds that are not pronounced in an English standard spelled word. That is
because Arabic phonological inventory and system is quite different from English
phonological inventory and system. Other spelling problems that face not only Saudi
students but all English language students take place where we cannot justify why
some words are spelled different from their pronunciations. These are about the
pronunciation and spelling problems. And about grammar problems, most Saudi
students take up their own language structure rules, employ and translate them
literally in English. Accordingly, many problems and mistakes can be created.
Another problem is that some Saudis don’t study the English language structure rules
well. They think they can speak English well and in a short time when they study it in
an English speaking country without paying attention to the language structures and
the personal effort that entails to speak it well. These problems make the task a bit
difficult for them and probably prevent them from mastering the language. And
regarding vocabulary, they need to study, read and memorize the vocabulary items of
the English language phonologically, morphologically, and semantically in both oral
and written forms to understand and make sense of the language representation that
necessitate understanding it generally and wholly. Briefly stating, all what Saudi
students need is time and effort in studying grammar, vocabulary and knowing how to
pronounce and spell English words in order to get over these language problems.
