Industrial/Organization Psychology, Chapter 11 I/O Role Play You will be jump-starting a project on Psychology Careers, particularly those in I/O (Industrial/Organizational) Psychology. The project will be due and presented in either May 7th (Wednesday) or May 8th (Thursday), depending on your class period. In groups of no more than 4 people, you select one of the following careers: Personnel psychologist Organizational psychologist Human Factor (Engineering) psychologist Once you have selected the career, you will want to do the following: 1. RESEARCH - Use the computer lab to research the job description of your psychologist (what are the things he/she does at work?). - Take notes; send emails to yourself so you have the details 2. BRAINSTORM - Discuss with group members and decide on what company environment, employer (leader or manager), and employees would be a good stage to showcase your psychologists’ task. - Imagine a day in the life of your psychologist and start drafting a script - Advice: try looking at companies’ advertisement hiring the specific psychologist. It will tell you the necessary qualification and job description in more specific context (e.g., www.indeed.com) Take notes; take pictures or send emails 3. WRITE A SCRIPT - The script should take 10-15 minutes to present - The script should describe and show some part(s) of the psychologists daily job - There is no strict form; however, a good script would delineate roles to all members and clearly let the audience know “when what where how” things are happening. - Format example: drama/theater skit, video film, music video, PowerPoint Presentation, Prezi, storytelling… SCRIPT EXAMPLE : Janet is a personnel psychologist. She graduated from Columbia University with a PhD in industrial/organizational psychology and has been working in the field for 5 years. Janet currently works full-time for the Bureau of Examinations in New York City’s Department of Administrative services. The Bureau must determine how to evaluate the fitness of candidates seeking employment by the City. It is also responsible for developing, validating, administering and scoring competitive civil service examinations. His/her duties include: - Assisting the Bureau in job analysis (review the method and procedure) Test development, validation, administration and scoring Analyze the job analysis data, as well as candidate test performance data Train professional staff Provide input into the Bureau’s computer-based test delivery and scoring systems. Janet has been working on training the personnel for the last few days. The training involves selecting candidates for training, developing the method of training, and measuring the effectiveness by assessing employees’ knowledge before and after training. Here’s how her day went today… (varied crazy fun interactions with Bureau personnel ensues) *You will need a different format script depending on your project type (e.g., skit will include more dialogue and presentation should have more visuals) Industrial/Organization Psychology, Chapter 11 I/O Role Play Grading Rubric Student Name(s): _________________________________________________________ Class Period: ______ Research & Script (in your script you have included…) General job description of your psychologist Background information relevant to the job (e.g., education, courses taken, work experience) Current workplace, company environment, employers and employees Specific job description of your psychologist (describe one or two aspect of the job in detail) Presentation Generally took 10-15 minutes Accurate description of one of the three psychologists (personnel, engineering, organizational) Describes the specific psychologists’ daily work in detail All group members have a role in the script/presentation The format of the presentation is well planned/creative/aesthetically pleasing Project Punctuality ____ Project is on Time (10 Points) ____ Project is Late (No Points for Preparation) Project Content Grading Category: Preparation Grading Category: Critical Thinking Advanced- A Grade: All of proficient standards are met as well as the following: ____ Shows quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, time and effort in presentation ____ Highly creative ideas in the script ____ Information goes beyond recounting the facts to show a thorough assessment of how the daily routine/task of the psychologist would be conducted Proficient- B Grade ____ Shows time and effort ____ Well researched ____ Clear and concise ____ Student shows comprehension of the topics ____ All of the information is in student’s own words Basic- C Grade ____ ____ Meets 2-3 of the proficiency standards or Meets all standards for only part of the project.
