Purpose:
Responsible for operation of heavy equipment. Performs tasks related to park maintenance and related work as required.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be
assigned.
1. Assist in daily landscape maintenance.
2. Responsible for basic maintenance and cleaning of parks and surrounding areas and equipment.
3. Performs minor construction and facility repairs using skilled trade practices.
4. Performs public service functions during storms and inclement weather such as ice, high water, and accidents. May include
sanding bridges, placing and maintaining warning signs, setting up barricades, cutting up fallen trees and assisting the public.
5. Inspects equipment before and after use; performs minor maintenance activities and reports exceptional problems to the
supervisor.
6. Plants, fertilizes, cultivates, and irrigates lawns, turf, trees, shrubs, and flowers; mows, trims, edges and fertilizes lawns; and prunes
and sprays trees and shrubs.
7. Sweeps and rakes leaves; prepares and spades flowerbeds.
8. Removes litter from parks and roadside areas.
9. Assists in maintaining pool water chemistry in accordance with approved regulations.
10. Occasionally confers with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor.
11. Assembles special equipment for use by the public; installs signs, barriers, and parking bumpers.
12. Ability to follow safety rules and regulations; ability to work in all kinds of weather; ability to perform tasks and handle moderate to
heavy lifting.
13. Ability to get along with customers and co-workers.
14. Assists with other departments as needed.
15. Ability to follow safety policies and procedures.
16. Regular and punctual attendance.
17. Performs less skilled duties using hand tools such as pick and shovel.
18. Operates power tools such as chain saws, weedeaters.
19. Operates lawn maintenance equipment such as small tractors, riding mowers, etc.
20. Ability to read and write in order to be able to understand instructions and prepare daily activity logs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and to be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable
accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Ability to learn new skills.
Ability to get along with co-workers.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to use hand and power tools (i.e. picks, shovels, rakes, chainsaw, weed-eater).
Ability to cut, clear, drag and lift brush and tree limbs.
Ability to operate department vehicles and trailers.
Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to follow safety rules and regulations while working in heavy traffic areas.
Ability to work in continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing,
exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling,
crawling, carrying/lifting up to 50 lbs. indoor activity, exposure to electrical, explosive, biological and , dust mites hazards.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Read, write and converse fluently in English
Conditions of Employment:
Must have a valid Texas Class “A” or Class “B” CDL within ninety (90) days of employment and must meet the City’s driving standards.
Must pass a drug test, physical examination, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, credit check, and social security
number verification check.
Must be able to work overtime as requested and be on-call for the department during extreme weather and rotation of schedule on
nights/weekends. Must be able to respond to a call within 30 minutes.
