Course Objectives
This course is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the major historical
events, ideas, and developments since the 17th century. The course examines the expansion of
European culture to other world areas and the consequent changes for European life. It examines
the impact of the Industrial Revolution on all aspects of Western culture, the rise of modernity,
the 18th and 19th century changes in Europe and the political and cultural crises of the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. The course concludes with the emergence of the Cold War in the post1945 world, the effects on Europe today and how these contributed to the modern world. The
course also introduces students to the principles and methodology of history
Required Text
Kagan, Donald, Steven Ozment and Frank M. Turner. The Western Heritage Since1648 Vol.II
10th edition. Also, a supplementary paperback copy of Sigmund Freud’s Civilization and Its
Discontents will be required.
Class Requirements
There will be two (2) major exams, including a midterm and a final exam, along with a
research paper of 5-8 pages. Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate in
class discussions. Brief written assignments will be utilized randomly throughout the semester
and will be based on the daily readings. Grading breakdowns as follows:
Midterm Exam = 30%
Final Exam
= 30%
Research Paper = 25%

=15%
Research Paper requirements and guidelines will be given at a later date.

Any form of academic dishonesty, cheating, or plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student
