Direct Entry – Prior Training Pathway
Fellowship of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners via this Direct Entry Pathway is designed for Doctors who hold an
approved General Practice qualification gained by assessment. Those eligible may apply for exemption from GPEP1, Primex and
components of GPEP2.
Eligibility
Doctors who have a GPEP2 clinical time requirement of less than six months, and who hold one of the qualifications below gained by assessment
may apply for exemption from GPEP2:
 Members or Fellows of The Royal College of General Practitioners
 Members or Fellows of The Irish College of General Practitioners
 Fellows of The Hong Kong College of General Practitioners
 Certificants in General Practice, Netherlands
 Diploma van huisarts Diploma of General Practitioner, Belgium (up to 2007) and Master in de Huisartsgeneeskunde Master in General
Practice, Belgium (from 2007)
 Certificants in Family Medicine, College of Family Physicians of Canada (if gained following introduction of clinical exam)
Assessment
Pre-Assessment Visit Requirements
Eligible Doctors will be able to proceed to Fellowship assessment on completion in New Zealand of the following:
 Clinical Time – minimum of six months full time equivalent (FTE) in a CORNERSTONE accredited general practice
 Record Review – complete an RNZCGP approved record review within the 12 months prior to the Fellowship assessment visit
 Multi Source Feedback (MSF) – complete through an RNZCGP approved provider within 3 months of the Fellowship assessment visit
(includes a patient satisfaction survey)
 Cultural Competency Orientation – provide evidence of having undertaken an approved cultural competency event in New Zealand
 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – provide evidence of meeting the Medical Council of New Zealand’s requirements for CPD
for up to 12 months, in proportion to clinical time in New Zealand
 Personal Profile and Reflection – complete the RNZCGP Personal Profile and Reflection form prior to the assessment visit.
Fellowship Assessment Visit
The assessment visit must take place in a general practice in New Zealand where the Doctor has worked for three months or more (FTE) in the past
nine months. Candidates will be assessed by a Fellowship Assessor against the standards for Fellowship as published in the Fellowship
Assessment Visit Information Booklet. The Fellowship assessment visit will consist of:
 observation of at least eight consultations;
 review of 15 patient records;
 review of practice systems and equipment;
 and up to one hour for case based discussion.
Achieving Fellowship
Following the Fellowship Assessment visit, the doctor’s eligibility for Fellowship will be determined by the RNZCGP Censor(s) and Censor-in-Chief.
Fellowship of the RNZCGP will be achieved provided the following criteria are met:



demonstrates acceptable practice and consultation standards, based on their practice assessment visit, against the Fellowship Standards;
a pass in an RNZCGP endorsed resuscitation skills course to a minimum of Level 5 NZ Resuscitation Council, valid at the date of
awarding Fellowship;
a Certificate of Good Standing from MCNZ dated within three months of awarding of Fellowship.
Fees
Applicants for this pathway must be a financial member of RNZCGP. The fee for this pathway is $3000 plus GST (current until March 31 2013).
The fee covers the cost of processing your application, the Multi Source Feedback and the Fellowship Assessment visit.
