Dear Parents, We have HIGH “Street” Expectations for Student Behavior! During the summer the High Street Staff met and discussed our building behavior plans. We made some revisions and developed some new plans. Throughout the school year we will be implementing a program called ‘Character Counts”. The program focuses on Six Pillars of Character - Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Students and staff members will work together to introduce and learn about each Character Trait throughout the year (see schedule below). When the skill is introduced we will have a school wide assembly and each grade level will take turns preparing a skit and information to introduce the Character Trait to the whole school! August/September ~Respect October ~ Responsibility November/December ~ Caring January ~ Trustworthiness February/March ~ Citizenship April ~ Fairness May ~ review Students will have opportunities to earn rewards based on the Character Traits! We also discussed having common expectations for student behavior throughout the building. As a result we have developed some guidelines for behavior. We believe that if we set clear and consistent expectations for behavior that the students will know and be able to do what is expected of them in any given setting! The following pages describe the expected behavior for students in the school setting. We hope that by providing a copy to the parents you will understand what is expected and encourage your child to do his/her best to live up to these expectations. If your child is having difficulty –you will receive a Student BehaviorParent Communication Form – so you can be aware of any problems. In the past – students were assigned a ‘Noon Room’ as a consequence for misbehavior. For a number of reasons it was decided to move this to the morning rather than lunch time. When a student receives this as a consequence…he or she will go to the computer lab instead of going out for morning recess. This morning time will also be used for students who have missing assignments or need to make up homework. If a student has difficulty during the school day – or during recess, he/she may be asked to walk laps or take a ‘time out’. These two consequences are designed to give children a few minutes to think about their behavior choices – and what they could/should do instead of what they did do…. Walking laps is a ‘healthy’ alternative to ‘sitting’ in time out –especially for those children who have a lot of energy to burn! The expected behaviors will be posted in each classroom, in the hallways and in the appropriate designated areas. We are providing you a copy – since the Student Handbook was printed prior to some of these revisions being made – and we did not want to waste paper and ‘reprint’ the entire handbook to include these revisions. We are looking forward to a great year! We are certain that these guidelines for behavior will help your student not only learn appropriate behavior to be responsible and good citizens – but will also create a safe, caring, fair, and respectful environment – where ALL students can learn and feel safe and comfortable! If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Anderson in the office! Thank You! The High Street Staff Student Rewards for Good Behavior! Each grade level will be asked to “Lead’ two character traits This will include: Being responsible for the building – hallway bulletin board Preparing a skit for the assembly Student announcements, posters any other unique ideas the students may have! Contests, challenges etc. Small color coded cards/tickets will be made for each character trait. When a student demonstrates the targeted character trait…. He/she will be given one of the cards/tickets and will be asked to write his/her name on the back. Students will place the earned card in the classroom Character Counts jar. At the end of the scheduled time…each teacher will pull 5 cards/tickets – these 5 students will earn a wrist band – with corresponding character trait. Each teacher will pull 3 additional names – those students will earn a Character Trait Pencil. Students and Teachers will use a classroom graph to determine which student had the most tickets in the jar for that trait…. That student will earn a ‘dog tag’ necklace. Anytime a student demonstrates a skill….creates or writes something or completes an activity or project that is a good example of any of the six character traits…teachers are encouraged and asked to post or add things to the building bulletin boards. After the prize drawings…tickets may be stapled to the corresponding bulletin board. “Caught Being Good” Adults in the school are asked to fill out “Tickets’ when they “Catch a Student” Being Good! The ‘Caught Being Good” tickets will be turned into the office and announced during morning announcements. The tickets will be kept for a weekly prize drawing. Each Friday, two tickets will be drawn during the announcements – One winner will receive special coupons from local restaurants the second winner receives a “Caught Being Good –TShirt! The T-shirts are donated by our school business partners – AM Leonard.
