THE CLARE ISLAND ADVENTURE RACE 2012 THE PRICE The price for the Clare Island Adventure Race is €59.99 Return ferry transfer to and from Clare Island Race entrance fee Race prizes Map with pre-marked transition areas Post event food Race safety cover provided by Mayo Mountain Rescue & stewards THE COURSE Breakdown Run Cycle Run / Climb Total 9.50km 14.29km 4.99km 28.78km Start point at Go Explore Hostel – (Latitude, Longitude: 53.80403433437959, -9.949193000793457) Stage 1 – Capnagower / Fawnglass loop run (DIB point 1 Go Explore Hostel @ beginning and end) Run along tarmac road with a small piece of green road wet in areas 4.69km Stage 2 – The Gravel Pit cycle (DIB point 2 Gravel Pit @ end) Cycle along tarmac road to the gravel pit 6.08km Stage 3 – The Knockmore Mountain climb (DIB point 3 Mountain top @ middle and DIB point 4 Gravel Pit @ end) Run along green road for around 1km before beginning the mountain climb from circa 100m to 460m and back down the same way 4.99km Stage 4 – The Church Gate cycle (DIB point 5 Go Explore Hostel @ end) Cycle along tarmac roads through the Church Gate and along the westerly side of the island (caution note; some roads are in disrepair) to complete the Clare Island circuit 8.21km Stage 5 – The Knockaveen hill run (DIB point 6 Hill top @ middle and DIB point 7 Go Explore Hostel @ end to complete the race) Run along tarmac for about 0.5km then along green road for about 1.5km before going off road to climb Knockaveen hill and back down to complete circuit 4.81km THE CLARE ISLAND ADVENTURE RACE 2012 MANDITORY KIT Guide Map (provided by organisers at registration) Compass Survival blanket and whistle. ALL other mandatory kit MUST be carried with you during the race. SPECTATOR INFORMATION For spectators the best place to view the race is from Sailor’s Bar & Restaurant beside Go Explore Hostel. The race both starts and finishes here. EVENT SCHEDULE This is a preliminary schedule. Ferry times and departure points may vary depending on weather condition. Ferry departs Clare Island 21st October 2012 at 10.00am Sunday morning and again at 1.00pm. A line up of local traditional musicians will play the night away in a warm cosy atmosphere with an open fire in the corner. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BIKE - All of the bike section of the race is on tarmac roads however some of the roads are in disrepair with some areas having grass growing on the road. There are some very steep ascents and descents on route with some sharp turns immediately at the foot of some steep descents. It is an absolute necessity to have excellent breaks and tyres with excellent grip. The run / climb sections of the race bring you through some of the most beautiful countryside in the country with spectacular views spanning the entire Clew Bay area from the Killery Fjord, Mweelrea Mountain, Croke Partick, Westport, Mulranny and Achill Island. Any person found littering will be immediately disqualified. Caution; Always obey the rules of the road / watch the road for markings of areas of special risk (please note that these markings do not identify all areas of risk) / wear suitable shoes for downhill wet off road conditions.
