The Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen is a vibrant, international community of excellent researchers-teachers. It consistently receives the highest evaluations both for research and for teaching among philosophy departments in the Netherlands. The presently advertised positions will have their primary appointment in the Department of the History of Philosophy. The Faculty's two other departments are Theoretical Philosophy and Ethics, Social, and Political Philosophy. Job description The candidates’ research should focus on one or more areas in the History of Philosophy. Teaching includes courses at undergraduate and graduate level in the department of the History of Philosophy as well as courses for students from non-philosophy faculties. Given expertise already available in the department, teaching expertise in areas such as ancient philosophy, modern philosophy (from Kant onwards to the present) and continental philosophy are especially welcome. Profile of the candidates The successful applicants will have a PhD in philosophy prior to appointment, a strong research profile and publication record appropriate to career stage, and research interests in the history of philosophy broadly conceived. Further requirements are: excellent didactic qualities; a willingness and ability to apply for Dutch and/or European grants for research projects; ability to carry out administrative duties; for non-native speakers of Dutch, working knowledge of Dutch within 3 years after appointment. Conditions of employment Both positions are 0.7 fte each. After a probationary period of 2 years, the appointment will become permanent on condition of a positive evaluation of teaching and research. The starting date is 1 September 2015. Salary and conditions are in accordance with appointment at lecturer level (Universitair Docent) and are depending on education and experience. The salary will range between € 3.324,- and € 5.171,- gross per month for a fulltime appointment (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities). The salary will be supplemented by a holiday allowance of 8% per year and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
