Old Miners’ Days 2015
Miss, Jr. Miss and Little Miss Viburnum Pageant
Friday October 2, 2015
All contestants will compete in the following phases of competition:
Judges Chat
A panel of judges will meet with each contestant. Judges will take turns asking
questions and chatting with the girls. This is a more informal time for the judges to get
to know the contestants aside from pageant night. Discussions will be about family, the
contestants likes, dislikes; goals for life, etc… All questions will be appropriate for age.
Personal introduction
Contestants will introduce themselves and thank their sponsor. During this phase of the
competition emphasis will be placed on how well contestants speak and how you present
yourself on stage.
Formal Wear
This is a time to show your personality and confidence. Choose a dress that shows off
your unique personality in your choice of color and style. You should feel confident and
excited about who you are and how you want to present yourself to the judges. (It is not
necessary to purchase a new dress--- borrowing is just fine!)
On Stage Interview Question
This part of the competition is to see if you can deal with a little pressure!! We will be
looking for composure, your answer, and your stage presence. Questions will be age
appropriate. Although we will practice random questions at practice, a list of
questions will NOT be given out for practice. Part of the points given in this
category is judged on how well you “think on your feet”.
Essay
Junior Miss— Your essay topic is “If you had the ability to travel back in time how
far back would you travel, what would you do, and why?”
Your typed essay should be about 1 page in length or between 300 & 500 words.
Miss Viburnum—Your essay topic is “In the movie ‘Back to the Future’ Marty
accidentally travels back in time 30 years. If you were sent back to 1985 would
you try to make changes that would impact us now in 2015 or would you let
history repeat itself? Explain what changes, if any, you would make and why
you chose them.”
Your typed written essay should be between 500 & 1000.
All essays should be double spaced using 12 font, Times New Roman. You will be judged
on content, grammar, spelling, and personality. Your opinion counts!
You will need to turn in 3 copies of your essay. Due date of essays will be announced at
a later time, DO NOT procrastinate! Points will be deducted if your essay is turned
in late! Do not put your name on the essay… place a cover page with your
name.
Participation/Fundraising
Fundraising is not optional. If you wish to participate in the pageant, you must also
participate in the fundraising events that take place to raise money for not only the
pageant itself, but for the scholarships and other prizes that are awarded. We will have
several fundraisers over the next couple months because we have a small window of
time to raise a lot of money. If adequate money is not raised, scholarships/prizes will
have to be altered.
We will not have many on stage practices so when we do that time is valuable and
everyone is expected to listen, be polite, and participate. I understand that other school
activities and plans will take place that will keep some from coming to all practices, that
is fine, but when present make good use of that time. Points will be given for
participation/fundraising that will count toward point totals pageant night.
Talent Competition-Optional
This year, talent is a completely optional category with the points awarded NOT
counting towards pageant totals. Talent is supposed to be a fun category, not something
that keeps girls from participating in the pageant and not all talent can be performed on
a stage. For all contestants wishing to compete in the special talent segment an
additional $10 entry fee will be required. (This can be paid by whomever and
does not have to come from the sponsor) Talent prizes will be given separate
and talent winners will have a chance to perform their talent on the main stage
at Old Miner’s Days. Talent still has to be approved by myself and the other Miss
Viburnum Committee members. Learning your talent needs to take place at home, you
will be given time during practice to go through it, but this time should be used to
perfect it and get used to performing it on stage. Depending on the number of girls
wishing to participate, a time limit for talent may be enforced.
Sponsorship
Each contestant is responsible for their own sponsor. A sponsor can be a business,
parent, grandparent, family member or friend. Contestants will receive a sash with
sponsors name to wear on pageant night. Sponsors will be listed in the program, in the
newspaper, and other promotional releases.
Sponsorship fees are as follows:
Little Miss
Jr. Miss
Miss
$50.00
$70.00
$80.00
Part of competing in Miss Viburnum is participating in the parade on Saturday. All
winners will be required to ride in the parade on Saturday without exception. All
contestants are required to ride in the parade as well, unless you are required to work
a class booth during that time or participate in a separate float within the parade. In this
case you need to let me know ahead of time. Contestant families are responsible for
arranging a car, truck, float etc for the parade—in the past contestants and winners have
ridden in cement trucks, jeeps, dune buggies, and on 4 wheelers 
A practice schedule will be made available as well as fundraising information after
application deadline. Contestants will have the opportunity to work through every aspect
of the pageant competition, from walking on stage, to answering questions, to talent
practice.
It is my goal to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. If you have
questions, comments, concerns just let me know!
