April 2013
Welcome to Issue 4, 2012-2013
The spring term was as busy as ever for
all our students but there was also a
plethora of exciting and informative
activities taking place. Numerous Higher
Education
events
were
positively
received, a successful French exchange
programme took place, there were
numerous
entertaining
evenings
celebrating the talents of students across
the performing arts subjects, we
celebrated national sporting success,
young champions were acknowledged
and the humorous antics of staff and
students raised a commendable amount
for comic relief. You also may have
noticed our new mathematics block
taking shape and building work is set for
completion in the summer.
October 2010
7th
On March
all the students who sat
January examinations received their
modular results. Many students achieved
high grades which may be an indicator of
student success in the summer
examinations. All students have been
advised to discuss their results with their
Subject Tutors and Personal Tutor. Any
student who has requested a re-sit is
advised to attend all relevant workshops
that their subject staff provide, which
usually occur during lunchtime.
On 6th March, the college hosted another
very successful careers convention. Year
12 students and their parents were able
to talk to professionals from over 30
businesses, each representing their own
occupations, to provide an insight into
specific careers.
On 20th March the college hosted the
annual Higher Education conference
providing an opportunity for year 12
students to meet and discuss degree
courses with over 50 lecturers from more
than 20 leading universities. This allowed
them to gain further information regarding
specific courses and any academic
requirements they may need to pursue
their desired career.
April Key Dates
In addition on the evening of 20th March
we hosted a Higher Education Forum for
year 12 parents wishing to discover more
about potential career paths beyond
further education. If you missed this event
or were unable to get a ticket, Aston
University are also holding a Parents’
Higher Education Advice Evening on
Wednesday 12th June. Follow this link for
more details.
Finally, please be aware that attendance
and assessment data for year 13 (the fifth
set of five) and Year 12 (third set of five
over the two year period) are now
available and can be accessed through
the parental area of the website.
Yours sincerely

Tutorial Programme Update
Year 13 tutorials are currently being used for 1:1 discussions and reviews. This is a very important opportunity for
students to discuss their career and university options and receive appropriate advice and guidance. Personal tutors
will also discuss how the students are managing and organising their time in the run-up to their final examinations and
assisting them to set appropriate targets for this important period.
There has been a clear focus on ‘Planning your Future’ for Year 12 students this term which has included advice on
planning for conventions, conferences and open days and the Higher Education Conference on the 20th of March
provided them with a valuable opportunity to explore their options at university. In conjunction with this, Year 12
students are also currently meeting with their tutors to review their progress and discuss their subject choices for next
year, as well as setting appropriate targets in the period preceding their summer examinations.
Volley Ball Champions
Recently, our girls’ volleyball team (representing the West Midlands
region) became British Colleges National Champions and gold medal
winners at Bath University!
The team performed amazingly well not dropping a single set throughout
the competition. They beat Petroc College in the final from the South
West Region 25-7 25-7 in a convincing victory. Jade Butcher was also
deservedly named player of the match.
The players are back row left to right Jade Butcher (Captain), Kathy
Penn, Sadie Barnham, Michelle Bullock, Aimee Hill, front row left to
right, Georgia Yellowey, Klaudia Siffelova and Sarah Walker.

Director of Curriculum, Mrs Rosie Shale is working very closely with our recently appointed, HE Development
Managers - Dr Sarah White and Ms Katy Wareham Morris - on the development of the HE provision at King Edward's
College. As of September 2013, King Edward's will offer Diplomas in Higher Education in Media and Cultural Studies,
and Social Science, providing post A-Level and mature learners with the opportunity to complete the first and second
year of a degree level course, validated by Middlesex University. The programmes will be cheaper and more flexible
than traditional HE courses, thus making degree level education more accessible. The HE team are working hard to
develop and design courses which are innovative and engaging whilst also providing valuable insight into related
professional sectors and careers. These courses are due to be officially validated in June.
The Student Voice Night of the Champions
On Wednesday March the 13th the TSET student voice committee organised a fantastic event celebrating student
success and achievement in the Stourbridge area -The Student Voice Night of the Champions. The event consisted of
a series of awards for various student achievements as well as a range of entertainment provided by King Edward VI
College, Red Hill School, The Thorns School, Ridgewood School and Stagecoach. A number of students from King
Edwards were prize winners; Astra McKenzie the overall winner of the Unsung hero award; Matt Wickens Contribution to school life; Jessica Alcorn – Bravery; Ruby Stringer-Role model; Zoaib Iqbal - Good Citizen; Hannah
Parker - contribution to performing arts; and Jack Matthews - contribution to sport. The evening was attended by
around 250 guests who were a range of VIPs from the Stourbridge area including Governors, Heads and teachers
