2013 State 4-H Dairy Skillathon Contest Results:
The 4-H Dairy Skillathon Contest is an activity that is designed to help youth learn more about
our dairy industry. Youth compete as a member of a team or as individuals in a fun and
interesting contest format that includes, but is not be limited to: identification of dairy products;
identification of feedstuffs; identification of milking and dairy equipment; evaluation of forage
samples; evaluating and judging dairy cattle; and problem-solving.
Junior Division

2013 District Junior Dairy Shows and N.C. State Fair Junior Dairy Show:
Five district junior dairy shows were held in addition to the junior dairy show held at the N.C. State
Fair. District shows included the Statesville District Junior Dairy Show; Western N.C. District Junior
Dairy Show; Greensboro District Junior Dairy Show; Northwest Area District Junior Dairy Show;
and Central Carolina District Junior Dairy Show.
2013 Southeastern U.S. Dairy Youth Retreat:
Georgia hosted the 2013 Southeast Dairy Youth Retreat June 16-20th in Valdosta, GA. This
annual retreat is open to any youth ages 9-19 who is interested in the dairy industry (this year one
8 year old got permission to attend). 35 Participants from North Carolina joined other youth from
South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida at this retreat. Thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, and
dairy producers who worked to make this year’s retreat a success. The 2014 Southeast Dairy
Youth Retreat will be held in Virginia.
2013 National 4-H Dairy Conference Delegates
Congratulations to Evan Gunter (Randolph County) for being selected through an application
process to represent North Carolina as a delegate to the National 4-H Dairy Conference that was
held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Evan participated in workshops, seminars, farm
visits, and the World Dairy Expo with youth from across the United States and parts of Canada
as they developed their leadership skills. Noah Pendry was one of two youth delegates from
across the country that served on the 2013 National 4-H Dairy Conference Planning Committee.

The 2013 State 4-H Dairy Judging A Team competed in the All American 4-H Dairy Judging
Contest in Harrisburg, PA and in the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo
in Madison, WI. Team members: Olivia Horning (Rowan County) Ethan Holland (Iredell
County) Lauren Luther (Rowan County) Kelly Parkins (Haywood County) Coaches: Nancy
Keith, Iredell County Agricultural Extension Agent, (Lead Coach); and Melissa Staebner, Yadkin County Extension Agent (Assistant Coach).

NC State Fair Fitting and Showmanship
Congratulations to Aimee Sink who placed first in the 2013 NC State Fair Fitting and
Showmanship Competition. Aimee will receive an award of $250.
NC State Fair Junior Dairy Management Contest
The 2013 NC State Fair Junior Dairy Management Contest was organized by Marti Day. Kids
interested in the dairy industry are able to take a written test on dairy management skills.
2013 State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest Results:
The Dairy Quiz Bowl is a contest with questions about various dairy topics. One statewide contest is
held each year. Teams compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions posed by a
contest moderator. A written exam is also part of the senior division contest at the state level.

2013 State 4-H Dairy Poster Contest:
Each year the State 4-H Dairy Poster Contest educational activity involves a large number of youth
in a meaningful learning experience as they learn about our dairy industry. Competition in this
contest is conducted on an individual basis in Division I (9-12 years of age), Division II (13-15 years
of age), and Division III (16-19 years of age) at the county and state level. Youth in Division IV (5-8
years of age) participate on a non-competitive basis at the county level only. County winners in
Divisions I through III are determined and then the first place winners are entered in the state contest.
All posters at the state competition in Division I, II, and III are displayed in a prominent place at the
Junior Dairy Show in the Jim Graham Building at the NC State Fair. The following awards are
generously provided to state winners in Division I, Division II, and Division III by the Southeastern
United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA): First Place: $100 cash; Second Place: $75 cash; and
Third Place: $50 cash.
