Semantics and Etymology of a Word
Writing #2
1. Assignment:
Using Gloria Naylor’s “A Question of Language” as a model, write a 3+ page
essay that explores the semantic usage of one word/phrase in the English
language. Stylistically, the writing may be humorous, clever, touching,
poignant, or upsetting, for starters. Structurally, the writing must anchor to
one word/phrase and analyze the various usages of that word and its various
meanings and forms.
Like Naylor’s article, the essay must begin with two generalized, abstract
opening paragraphs followed by a series of extended illustrations of her
definitions. Moreover, a deeper reflection upon the derogatory word,
Naylor’s work arrives at a conclusive point and avoids the trap of
disconnected wordplay.
An essay based more on semantics may take a simple word and explore how
its use changes in different contexts or when paired with other words or
phrases. An essay based more on etymology may explore how a word
originated and evolved into its current connotation and meaning.
You must include at least two (2) secondary sources in your essay, using
them effectively without sounding overly academic or pretentious. Your
research may include anything, from an exploration of the word’s origin to a
reference to pop culture. Just keep it sharp and smart.
