‘Tis the season to learn grammar
Fa la la la la la la la la
We are going to learn about nouns
Countable and uncountable nouns
They are often misused in our writing and essays so listen up:
Or else you’ll fail Honors English
and live out on the streets, married to Jethro.
I don’t want that to happen
So please, will you just tell me what
these nouns mean without
putting me to sleep
A noun that has individual units
and is perceived by the senses is a
countable noun
like
reindeer or Santa Claus or
sleighs up on rooftops
bringing presents and tiny toys
to little girls and boys
There are Christmas trees with lights
with snow and pretty sights
for people to see and smile
These are countable nouns.
Uncountable nouns, uncountable nouns
like milk, soap, and detergent
Uncountable nouns, uncountable nouns,
like snow, food, and detergent
cannot be plural, with an “s”
changed by some, any, much, many, less
Uncountable nouns, uncountable nouns,
like milk soap and detergent
It's the most beautiful time of the year Lights fill the streets spreading so much cheer
I should be playing in the winter snow
but I’m going to be studying grammar
I don't want to miss out on the holiday,
but I can’t stop thinking ‘bout those nouns.
I should be doing my math homework
but I’m going to be counting up those nouns
like plenty of,
- enough, some/any
- or no can modify all the nouns
Everyone's gathering around the fire
Chestnuts roasting like a hot July
I should be chillin' with my folks, I know
but imma be studying grammar
Are there exceptions to these rules?
Yes there are, with certain words
depending if they’re used in
a countable or uncountable sense
-Collective nouns can be countable
--abstract nouns are uncountable
- and concrete nouns can be used in a
- countable or uncountable sense
- many, a lot of and
- quite a few, can be used to
- modify only the countable nouns
- but much, lots of
quite a little, a little
or quite a bit modify uncountable nouns.
It’s the most beautiful time of the year…
