OBJECTIVE(S):Conveying Past, Present and Future Tenses
OBJECTIVE(S): Improve Sentence Structure Using
Appropriate Verbs
HIGHEST LEVEL OF BLOOMS TAXONOMY INCLUDED IN LESSON:
LESSON INTRODUCTION (SHARE OBJECTIVES WITH STUDENTS):
The objective for the class is to implement the CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1
for students. This standard helps demonstrate command of the
conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or
speaking. Though this is the standard, the class will focus on an extension
of it: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1e. The goal is to get students using verbs that
will help them convey a sense of the past, present and future. First grade
students will demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and
develop innovative products and processes using technology. This will be
completed through the Technology Standard: Creativity and Innovation.
With prompting and support, students will improve their sentence
structure using the appropriate verbs.
PRE REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE
 Students must know
how to read on a
Kindergarten level.
 Students should know
how to write.
 Students need to be
aware that a sentence
includes nouns and
verbs.
DELIVERY OF CONTENT (DIRECT INSTRUCTION):
The students will be introduced to CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1e through the
process of repeating past, present and future verbs. With the use of an
overhead projector, the students will see a variety of verbs to get familiar
with the different tenses. For example, the students will see one word and
see the same word being used in another tense. (Finish, Finished).
Another way to deliver CCSS.ELA-Literacy is by creating an in-class activity
that focuses specifically on one tense at a time. For instance, if students
were focusing on past tense sentences we would do the activity, “What
Happened Yesterday?” The word “yesterday” is the indicator of it being
past tense. This activity will allow every student to express what they did
the day before using verbs they have learned, (I called my grandma
yesterday). If the students are doing present tense then they would they
would do the activity, “Random Questions.” In this activity, every student
will be asked a question relating to the present; each question will be
different from the other making these questions random. When students
are asked a question like: “What kind of cereal do you eat?” The response
should be, “I eat Cheerios,” thus making the sentence current by using the
verb “eat.”A similar activity called, “Tomorrow” will be administered for
future tense where students will say what they will do tomorrow.
NEW KNOWLEDGE:
 Students will be able to
differentiate between
the past, present and
future tense.
 Students will be able to
structure their
sentences using the
correct verbs.
 Students will acquire
better speaking
patterns.
 Students will be able to
generate new ideas
based on the material
covered.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES (AUTHENTIC TASKS):
Students will be provided with worksheets that include a total of 9
sentences, each of which are missing the correct verb. The student will be
given a total of 3 sentences per tense to fill in the blanks. At the bottom of
the sheet will be a word bank with all the correct tenses, but it will be up
to the students to put the verb in the right blank. This is an individual task
and students are expected to complete it with up to little or no help.
Another activity that students will experience will involve the Smart Board.
Students will be paired with a partner and will be provided with an index
card containing a verb that as a class we have practiced. While paired,
students are expected to engage and work together to decide if that verb
is past, present or future tense. Once they figure out the correct tense,
they must come up with a sentence along with that verb and write it on
the Smart Board. This activity will be most effective because they get to
come up with their own sentence. Not only that, but their peers will be
watching them as they come up to the board and tell the class what their
verb was, what tense it belonged to and read their sentence. For those
who might not understand, this would be the time to discuss with the class
and with them why that verb belonged to the appropriate tense. For every
student that tries will be rewarded with a sticker or some kind of treat to
keep them encouraged and motivated to do well in the class. As an
instructor I want all my students to be successful.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION
 Help students become
familiar with hearing
and using different
verbs to form their
sentences correctly.
 Expanding their literacy
so that they can reach,
not only reach the next
level of education, but
their full potential.
 The skills which they
will acquire from this
class will help them
think about how they
can change and form
sentences in a new
way and use them
wherever they go.
MEASURING STUDENT LEARNING OF OBJECTIVE (ASSESSMENT):
To measure student learning, I will conduct it in three ways: in-class activities, individually and groups. In
order to measure in-class activities, I will have a list of the students’ names and make sure that I call on
everyone to participate. I will make notes by each person’s name monitoring the progress as we go further
in learning each tense. I will also measure the learning process of the student by collecting the worksheets
from the individual activity. The worksheets will help me determine if or how much students understand the
material and what changes may I need to make if I see that some students may not be performing as well.
The paired activities will be measured much like the in-class activities, which is mainly by my observation.
This paired activity is also beneficial for the Technology Standard: Creativity and Innovation. With the use of
Excel, an extension of the Microsoft Office tool, I will be able to calculate the averages of how my students
are doing overall with the intake of all work from every individual. As an instructor I will individually give
them feedback in the form of verbal encouragement, positive reinforcement or a visual grade. Overall, the
objective for measuring student will result in every student meeting the requirements of CCSS.ELALiteracy.L.1.1.e.
