Overview
This is an inquiry-based course designed to help you learn science processes, skills, and understandings related to a
wide range of topics in chemistry through a “flipped classroom” approach. During this course, you will learn to
identify basic questions and concepts that guide scientific investigation and to design and conduct your own
investigations. Some important skills you will develop include microscopy, graphing and measurement,
identification of research questions, making connections, and the ability to be a self-directed learner. Basically,
you will be a scientist in this class.

Weekly Quizzes
Weekly quizzes will be given on the last day of the school week over material that was covered that week in class. I
will select one problem from an exit slip to act as the weekly quiz for the week. If a student does not understand
how to complete one of the problems then they need to come to tutoring to receive additional help.
Extra Help/Tutoring
I am available during the following times to help students with any questions or to provide extra help trying to
understand the concepts discussed in class:
Monday – 7:30-8:10
Tuesday – no tutoring available
Wednesday – 7:30-8:10 & 3:30-4:30
Thursday – 3:30-4:30
Hall Passes
Students receive 2 hall passes per semester (according to school policy). This includes retrieving items from lockers,
the water fountain, and using the restroom. Passes to the nurse/office or other errands will be handled by the
teacher.
Calculators
I will provide a calculator to any student who does not have access to one. If you choose to use one of my
calculators you will be assigned a number, which you are responsible for while you are in my classroom. If the
calculator you are assigned goes missing you will be held responsible and asked to replace it even if you
claim to not have used it during the class. (Learn to love it!) You can indicate on the final page whether you
will be using a calculator or not.
Exams
If a student is absent on a test day they will have two weeks to make up the test either before school or after
school. After the two week period has passed a “0” will be put in the grade book.
If a student is not satisfied with their grade, they have the opportunity to retake the exam. In order to complete a
retake, students must correctly answer a minimum of 8 questions out of the textbook from each section the test
covers. Students will then be given an open response exam over the material.
If a student is still not satisfied with their grade, they will have another opportunity to retake the exam. At this time
I will request a meeting with the student and parent to discuss different studying techniques and strategies to help
the student succeed. The student will then need to answer all questions out of the textbook from ach section the
test covers. Students will then be given a different open response exam covering the material.
Laboratory Procedures
Students may NOT eat/drink in the science lab. This is OSHA policy and school policy. Food or beverage being
consumed may be stored, confiscated, or thrown out at the teacher’s discretion.
