LSESU Mixed Lacrosse Club – Founding LSE Mixed Lacrosse Club LSE Mixed Lacrosse Club Student Group Founding LSE Mixed Lacrosse Club Project Title This is the inaugural founding of the LSE Mixed Lacrosse Club - the fastest game on turf and fastest growing sport in the UK! Project Tweet Pitch: Amount requested from LSE Annual Fund £5,620 £6,520 Total project cost Project Start Date (dd/mm/yy) Project End Date (dd/mm/yy) 24/09/15 10/06/16 Sport Choice Other After pilot launching Lacrosse at the LSE during the Lent Term of 2015, we have seen a great deal of interest among the student body. Despite missing the Freshers' Fair, the team captains were able to attract 18 players from various backgrounds, age groups and physical ability, with the membership continuing to grow every week! This year we were able to work with what we had from when Lacrosse previously existed at the LSE; however, next year we are expecting a much larger membership base which will require a significant investment in resources. These purchases will allow us to establish a presence in the fastest growing sport in the United Kingdom. The sport is growing particularly rapidly among other London universities as the Mixed Lacrosse League continues to grow. The aim of this project is to establish Lacrosse thoroughly at the LSE for the years to come, allowing us to accommodate any student who wants to learn the sport and meet new people. The success of this project will be measured by our ability to accommodate, ensure the safety of, and promote the fitness of our returning and new members for the years to come. Project Summary: Funds sought elsewhere: Please explain how There are several provisional organisations that we hope to gain support from as lacrosse continues to grow at the LSE. This mainly includes the manufacturers of lacrosse kit throughout the UK and US including Brine, Maverick, Gait, Adidas, Nike, and more. We feel that the reputation of the LSE, combined with the growth opportunities in the UK market, will make team sponsorship attractive for these provisional supporting organisations. This project strongly aligns with the goals of the LSE Annual Fund, which your project meets aims to support the development of new organisations that benefit the the criteria for university and its student population as a whole. While other sports teams financial support by at the LSE can often be restrictive based on student abilities, we welcome the LSE Annual Fund. players of all skill levels, and give any student an opportunity to make new friends while remaining physically fit. In addition, we take the responsibility of being only the second official mixed sports team on campus very seriously. We firmly believe that this provides a unique slant to University sports and will provide us an edge when recruiting new members in future years. As a new sports team with limited resources, we naturally need more resources to leave the ground and reach the level of the other universities, which received their initial resources long ago. This grant, consistent to the criteria of the fund, will give us the opportunity to develop and establish a presence in the league and on campus which emulates the diversity and inclusivity of the LSE. Ultimately, we will extend the excellent name and brand of the LSE to wide and diverse audience. It should also be noted that, as a local London sports team, we feel it is essential to give back to the community, potentially by introducing Lacrosse as a sport to local children and by running sponsored/charity events. This would not only help boost team morale and give back to the local community, but would further improve the LSE brand. Overall, we have returning leaders, future leaders, and interest among the student body; now we simply need the resources to keep up with the interest, thereby allowing us to accommodate our players, be taken seriously in the league and represent the LSE to the greatest potential. How would you recognise the LSE Annual Fund? Does this project require future Annual Fund Support? Why do you require funding for more than one year? Project Sustainability Statement As a relatively new club, the scope and opportunities for recognition are limitless. We have already been interviewed by the Beaver and expect future positive press coverage. We would also endeavour to boost our online profile by using social media to its full potential (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). In addition, there are excellent opportunities to present the LSE and the Annual Fund in a positive light through flyers, banners and media around campus (in particular during Freshers' Fair). There is also potential for Annual Fund stickers on equipment which will provide exposure during tournaments. All of this exposure would be even greater due to the natural diversity of the sport itself and the social media savvy of LSE students and the wider Lacrosse community. No This project is extremely sustainable since, after covering the initial high costs, the club will still be able to run and grow for many years to come. With the expected increased engagement with Lacrosse, membership will increase and therefore help fund the club in the future. We are aware that Lacrosse was previously offered at the LSE, and it probably failed due to a combination of factors including inadequate funding. However, this is unlikely to happen again seeing as we have established a platform for success and already recognised the interest among the student body. Given these resources and the continued involvement of returning leaders and team members, we are confident that this sports team will continue expanding year on year. Equality and Diversity Statement Mixed Lacrosse is the second non-gender-restrictive sports team at the LSE after volleyball. Additionally, we welcome all players regardless of skill level and familiarity with the sport. Our member base includes BSc and MSc students, and reflects the diversity which the LSE prides itself on. This makes us the most inclusive sports team on campus, demolishing any barrier that could ever interfere with someone wanting to try a new sport.
