Scope of responsibilities & distribution of tasks
PROVOST
- Chief Academic Officer of the university
- Responsible, under the direction of the President and Rector, for
strategic development planning, for developing educational and
research objectives and plans of the university, and for coordinating
their implementation. Responsible, under the direction of the
President and Rector, for raising academic standards, and planning
and implementing new academic developments.
- Assists the President and Rector in coordinating internal governance
activities:
o Chairs the Academic Forum and supervises the Academic
Secretary regarding Forum meetings’ preparation and follow
up.
o Assists the President and Rector regarding the work of the
Senate, including meetings’ preparation and follow up.
Member of the Senate and several Senate committees; chair of
several Senate committees, such as the Quality Assurance
Committee.
o Assists the Rector regarding the work of the Board of Trustees.
- Coordinates the adoption, revision, and implementation of CEU
faculty policies, with the help of the heads of academic head units,
under the supervision of the President and Rector, and Senate.
- Coordinates the adoption, revision, and implementation of CEU
student policies.
- Assists the President and Rector with central management activities:
o Oversees academic and academic support units of the
university (including Roma programs).
o Coordinates the adoption and supervises the execution of the
university budget.
o Coordinates the work of CEU Library, IAS, SUN, Institutional
Research Office, Outreach and Community Engagement.
o Chairs the SUN Board, the Tender Committee for external
grants, the Academic Events Fund Committee, and Research
Support Scheme Committee.
o Ex-officio chair of the Reappointment and Promotion

Committee for schools and departments. May delegate this
responsibility on a permanent basis to the Pro-Rector for Social
Sciences and Humanities for reappointment and promotion
procedures for all academic units in the area of social sciences
and humanities.
- Assists the President and Rector in the strategic coordination of
CEU’s academic cooperation activities
Reporting:
- Reports to the President and Rector; may act as deputy to the
President and Rector, as provided by CEU regulations.
- The Pro-Rector for Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Academic
Secretary report directly to the Provost. The Provost may delegate
the exercise of certain responsibilities to the Pro Rector.
- Academic unit heads report to the Provost on academic matters.
Deans of the two schools report to the President and Rector on all
matters, and are also responsible for reporting on academic matters
to the Provost.
- Heads of academic support units (e.g. Library, Center for Academic
Writing, Center for Teaching and Learning) report to the Provost.
PRO RECTOR FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES
- Works with the Provost in the exercise of responsibilities in the
academic area of social sciences and humanities departments. The
Pro Rector may be delegated on a permanent basis the exercise of
such responsibilities for social sciences and humanities, including in
terms of decision making, similar to the role of the Deans in the two
schools.
- Participates in budget planning meetings chaired by the Provost with
academic departments and research centers in the social sciences
and humanities.
- Works with Provost on strategic planning in the social sciences and
humanities at CEU.
- Serves as point of contact for academic departments in the social
sciences and humanities in recurring individual business with faculty

and students (leaves, unit affiliation, conflicts, exceptions from
admissions and academic rules, write-up and other grants, etc.)
Under the direction of the Provost, coordinates the work of CEU’s
research centers in the social sciences and humanities.
Coordinates CEU’s academic cooperation in Hungary.
Chairs the Scholarship Advisory Committee, the Ethical Research
Committee, and the University Doctoral Committee. Chairs the
Reappointment and Promotion Committee for the social sciences
and humanities departments as delegated by the Provost.
Represents academic fields of social sciences and humanities at CEU
to external and internal constituencies.
Reporting:
The Pro Rector for Social Sciences and Humanities reports to the
Provost.
Heads of academic units and research centers in the social sciences
and humanities report to the Provost through the Pro-Rector.
