Application Completion
 Create a two to three paragraph summary/essay describing why you are interested in the Academy
of Engineering and attach it to your application. This must be completed by the student.
 This application is due to Matt Wight c/o Lufkin Road Middle School by March 27, 2015
 Students will be notified of acceptance by e-mail.
Additional Information
 If there are any changes to school assignment, contact information, or interest in the program after
submitting this application, please contact Matt Wight.
 Only students assigned to Apex Friendship High School may apply.
 We can accept up to 75 students into the freshmen class and 75 students into the sophomore class.
The 2015-2016 is the only school year in which sophomores will be eligible to apply. A lottery is
used to determine acceptance into the Academy of Engineering.
 If more than 75 applications are received, a wait-list will be created by the lottery order.
I know that the Academy of Engineering (AOE) is a four year program (three years if I am a rising
sophomore). Rising sophomores may have to double up on a course. I know the Academy of
Engineering requires specific courses and a paid summer internship between the junior and senior year of
high school. The requirements must be met for completion of AOE. My parents are in agreement with
this application, and I am interested in being a student in AOE for the duration of the program.

Memorandum of Understanding
If selected as a member of the Academy program, I understand that:
1. I am making a commitment to the full (4) years of the program that includes courses outlined in
the curriculum sequence. Three (3) years if I am a rising sophomore, and I may have to double up
on a course.
2. Regular updates may be sent home via email to both the Academy member and parent/guardian.
It is necessary for me to have a valid email address on file.
3. I must report to Academy activities, job shadowing, internship opportunities dressed appropriately
in business attire and/or our specified Academy uniform.
4. After graduation I will be expected to fill out a yearly information sheet, keeping the Academy
Coordinator updated on my progress.
5. I must maintain academic excellence while enrolled in the Academy. This includes striving to
maintain a cumulative GPS (unweighted) of a 2.5 at the end of each academic year. Dismissal
from the program may result if my GPA fall below this standard. A performance improvement
plan will be completed before being removed.
6. All academy students must successfully complete academy requirements (course selections, job
shadowing, internships, field trips, etc.).
7. Students may dismiss themselves from the program as a result from continuing disciplinary
problems with a teacher or after a suspension from school. A behavior improvement plan will be
completed before being removed.
8. Participation and/or support of scheduled academy meeting/activities is expected of all members.
My participation will be documented in the work-based learning portfolio that will be maintained
throughout my Academy experience.
9. If I have any questions or problems with regard to any aspect of the Academy program, I can
contact the Academy Director.
I understand that being accepted into this program, I am committing myself to be an Academy participant
during my entire high school career. It is also understood that the goal of the Academy Director is to help
