Continuing Education Credit (3 hours) for Psychologists, and Licensed Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers and Professional Counselors "Sleep Across the Lifespan: What Mental Health Professionals Ought to Know about Insomnia, Apnea, Caffeine, Narcolepsy and How Sleep Changes as We Age." Sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Psychological Association Presented by Brad M. Wolgast, PhD, CBSM Saturday, April 6th, 2013 - State College, PA Celebration Hall 2280 Commercial Blvd. State College, PA 16801 Abstract: Americans today often treat sleep as a luxury or a vice rather than what it more likely is: a preventive health jackpot. The need for sleep is undeniable, while the understanding for its necessity is only just becoming understood. What is known about why we need sleep can help every one of us live healthier lives. This presentation is designed to educate mental health practitioners about healthy sleep, how it changes from birth to old age, while also teaching to recognize often missed symptoms of common sleep disorders, how to manage insomnia beyond sleep hygiene and when and where to refer clients (and maybe even family members) for an overnight sleep evaluation. In addition, a discussion of common sleep medications and their implications will be part of the presentation. Dr. Wolgast will bring along cases of his to discuss and encourages attendees to arrive with questions and cases of their own. About the Presenter: Brad Wolgast is a psychologist and psychotherapist at the University of Delaware’s Center for Counseling and Student Development and training director of the center as of Summer, 2013. As survivor of an 18 year long sleep disorder, he became overly-interested in sleep problems and sleep health far too young for his parents’ liking and has turned this life-long interest in sleep into a clinical practice. Brad has presented about sleep disorders and their treatment throughout the area and completed the Certification in Behavior Sleep Medicine. His favorite aspect of all of this is working with neighbors and the random people who have questions about what the heck is wrong with their sleep. Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1) Describe/Recognize the different types of insomnia, how they change across the lifespan, and identify the treatment options. 2) Recognize symptoms of narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless limb movement disorder, and understand how to do preliminary assessments for each. 3) Describe the difference between sleepwalking and night terrors and discuss how to manage each. 4) Explain the impact caffeinated products have on adults, young adults, children and how it affects their sleep and concentration. 5) List reasons when a client should be referred to a sleep medicine clinic for assessment, as well as know how to find accredited sleep centers in any state. 6) Discuss the current research related to sleep medication treatment of insomnia (over the counter and prescription only) compared to treatment using psychological methods.
