Biography – Dr. Rodney Redmond
Dr. Rodney Redmond, Associate Dean of Humanities at the Rockville campus of Montgomery
College, began his career in education over twenty years ago. He began working in secondary
education as a sophomore level English teacher. Later, he transitioned into a career in higher
education. Within the higher education arena, he worked as an adjunct professor, teaching
English Composition and Developmental English, at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio
before joining the English faculty at the Rockville campus of Montgomery College. During his
tenure as an English professor, he also served in various roles including his work as a member
of the Assessment Center Advisory Committee, the English Discipline Steering Committee, the
English CLEP Coordinator, the English Competency Coordinator and Chair of the Department
of English Composition, Literature and Professional Writing at the Rockville Campus.
In his current role, Dr. Redmond assists the Dean of Humanities with providing oversight of the
Humanities unit at the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College, comprised of 85 full-time
faculty members and almost 200 adjunct faculty members. Dr. Redmond works closely with the
Dean of Humanities in strategic planning, developing and administrating the unit’s budget,
implementing academic area reviews, and conducting faculty evaluations. Dr. Redmond also
plans professional development opportunities for faculty and staff in the unit and mentors at-risk
students. He serves as the Chair of The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program Board of
Directors, a community based scholarship program aimed at providing educational gap funding
for middle to low income residents of Montgomery County.
Dr. Redmond is well-versed in many of the issues that face higher education: developmental
education, student access and retention, student classroom behavior, student records and
confidentiality, and institutional governance. He works with the dean and department chairs to
recruit, train and mentor diverse faculty perspectives in the classroom which enhance student
success and retention. As the Associate Dean of Humanities at the Rockville campus of
Montgomery College, he collaborates with faculty and staff in the unit to support student
success and retention, sustain professional development opportunities for faculty and staff and
approaches to increase diversity. Dr. Redmond also works with students in his area to resolve
issues centered on access and student success strategies. He has become a mentor to many of
these students as they matriculate through higher education, especially at Montgomery College,
Rockville.
Dr. Rodney Redmond is an educator and leader, passionately committed to the success and
excellence of the community college and its students. His commitment is displayed through his
service on several committees within the College that support and enhance student success
and support faculty and staff development. Dr. Redmond has been at Montgomery College
since 1996, serving in the roles of Assistant Professor of English, Chair of the English
Department, and Associate Dean of Humanities. He has also served as Acting Dean of
Humanities and Interim Dean of Social Sciences, History, Education, Health and Physical
Sciences. Dr. Redmond graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English
Education from Rust College and Cum Laude with a Master of Arts in English from the
University of Akron. He also graduated Suma Cum Laude with a Doctorate in Higher Education
Administration (Community College Leadership) from Morgan State University. Dr. Redmond
has also completed The Chair Academy’s Leadership Academy for College and University
Leaders and The NCBAA Mid-Level Managers’ Institute, affiliated with American Association of
Community Colleges.
