Bishop E. Lane Davis Sermon Notes November 9, 2014 COME DOWN Isaiah 63:15-64:5 Isaiah was from an upper-class family whose ministry spanned over fifty years. He prophesied during a period of great prosperity which led the people to believe that they were operating in God’s favor. But underlying all that prosperity was wickedness, idolatry and moral decline which would incur God’s wrath in judgment. Isaiah 1-39 deals with Israel’s current state of rebellion against Jehovah. – [A message of judgment] Isaiah 40-66 is primarily prophetic of Messiah’s first and second coming. – [A message of hope] Text – Isaiah’s Prayer Isaiah 63:15-19 Isaiah’s response to the prophetic revelations he had received was one of repentance. He realized Israel’s plight was caused by Israel’s sin. He considers the vanity of Israel’s existence based upon their spiritual condition and can only weep and repent. Isaiah 64:1-5 Injected into his prayer was Isaiah’s desire that the glory of God would be revealed once again. This text refers to the Shekinah glory that came down on Mt Sinai when Israel was birthed as a nation. Ex 19:16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. Shekinah – [God dwells] Ps 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears. 7 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry. 8 Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it. 9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet. 10 And He rode upon a cherub, and flew; He flew upon the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness His secret place; His canopy around Him was dark waters And thick clouds of the skies. 12 From the brightness before Him, His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire. 1 Kings 8:10 And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, 11 so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD. The glory was not God, but an effluence from Him. The Shekinah was not the glory but the source and center of it. It has always been God’s desire to dwell among His people Church of God Family Worship Center - 5841 East H Ave. - Kalamazoo, MI 49048 - 269-382-3502 Bishop E. Lane Davis Sermon Notes November 9, 2014 John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 14:15 If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. Isaiah’s heart should reveal the passion of the church today To experience the glory and the power of God’s presence The church was birthed by a mighty move of God Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. “Rend the heavens and come down” A manifestation of His presence will… 1. Cleanse our hearts and minds a) You will not experience God’s presence where there is not first a cleansing 1 Chron 7:14 If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2. Restore of our passion a) The presence of the Lord stirs our spirit Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. 3. Renew our faith a) The presence of the Lord creates faith 1 Cor 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 4. Fill us with His love Rom 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 5. Equip us with power through a fresh outpouring of the Spirit – Acts 4:23-31 Church of God Family Worship Center - 5841 East H Ave. - Kalamazoo, MI 49048 - 269-382-3502
