Vol. 11 – No. 5
MCIA’s News and Notes is designed to provide members and other interested individuals with information about MCIA programs and services, as
well as timely access to information that impacts the seed industry and agriculture in general. Our format is structured to provide a brief
introduction to topics of interest along with contact information or links to sources where you can obtain more detailed information. Many of the
articles and items listed in this newsletter contain web addresses or hyperlinks by which you can obtain additional information. If you do not have
internet access and would like additional information on any of the topics mentioned in this newsletter, please contact the MCIA office and we will
forward you the information. Please feel free to contact the MCIA office if you have questions or suggestions for items to be included in future issues.
Save the Date – Missouri Crop Improvement / Missouri Foundation Seeds Wheat Plot Tour – June 11, 2015 – Columbia, MO
Missouri Crop Improvement and Missouri Foundation Seeds are offering MCIA members an opportunity to tour our 2015 wheat plot. The plot
contains older established lines, newly released lines for production under the ‘Momentum’ brand and new experimental lines currently under
evaluation for potential release as either a named certified variety or through the ‘Momentum’ program. We plan to begin at 1:00 p.m. which should
allow everyone a chance to travel to and from Columbia in the same day.
If you would like to attend, please contact the MCIA office and let us know you are coming and plan to meet at the MCIA office no later than 12:45
p.m. so we can coordinate transportation for the short drive to the plot. We realize everyone is busy at this time of year so if June 11 doesn’t quite fit
into your schedule but you would still like an opportunity to look at the plot, contact the MCIA office and we will try our best to find a time for
someone to show you the plot at a more convenient time.
2015 Small Grains Inspection
Much like the last two years, we are experiencing an abundance of cool, wet weather and the wheat crop is maturing at a slower than normal pace in
many areas. We anticipate that inspections will begin in SE Missouri in late May or early June and progress northward as the crop matures. The
most recent Missouri Ag Statistics report (May 18) lists the maturity of the 2015 crop at 77% headed, which is 15% ahead compared to the same date
last year and 4% ahead of the 5 year average of 72% for this date. Wheat condition statewide is listed at 1% very poor, 4% poor, 36% fair, 55% good
and 4% excellent. If you haven’t submitted field inspections requests for any of your production fields, please send them to the MCIA office ASAP
to allow for timely inspections. For applications already submitted, please monitor the status of your fields closely and notify the MCIA office or
your inspector immediately if you need to cancel fields for any reason. All fields may be canceled without penalty, provided notification is provided
prior to the inspector visiting the field.
Missouri/US Wheat Production Forecast
Missouri winter wheat production is forecast at 43.2 million bushels based on conditions as of May 12, which would represent a 1% increase from
last year. Harvested acres are projected at 720,000, down 20,000 acres from 2014. Yields in the state are expected to average 60 bu/ac, up 2 bu/ac
from 2014.
Nationally, winter wheat production is forecast at 1.47 billion bushels, up 7% from 2014. Expected acreage harvested totals 33.8 million acres, up
5% from 2014. Based on conditions as of May 12, the U.S. yield is forecast at 43.5 bu/ac, up 0.9 bu/ac from last year. (Source: USDA/NASS)
Soybean Quality Update
With conditioning and testing for the 2014 crop rapidly winding down, MCIA’s seed testing laboratory has completed analysis on 2,117 soybean
samples with an average germination of 88.26%. This is up slightly from the 88.02% reported in the April newsletter. Conditioning the 2014 crop
proved to be rather challenging for most conditioners as seed started out with marginal quality in many cases and continued a slow but steady decline
throughout storage and conditioning. As has been the case in recent years, the number of glufosinate tolerant (Liberty Link) and conventional (non
herbicide tolerant) samples submitted for analysis continued to increase.

2015 Fall Seed Directory
We are still processing last minute applications and hope to have the 2015 Fall Seed Directory posted to the MCIA web site by June 1st with a printed
copy distributed to all MCIA active, affiliate and associate members with the June newsletter mailing. Only those applicants who submit field
inspection requests by May 26th will be included in the directory. Please contact the MCIA office if you have questions with regard to availability or
sources of seed for a particular variety prior to receiving the directory.
MCIA Sponsors FFA Diversified Crop Production Proficiency Awards
MCIA once again sponsored the Diversified Crop Production Proficiency Awards at the 2015 State FFA Convention. Congratulations to the fine
young people that received these awards. (Source: Missouri FFA Association)

Herbicide Tolerant Soybean Inspection/Verification Requirements
With soybean planting upon us, producers are reminded that both Genuity RoundupReady 2 Yield® and LibertyLink® production fields have
herbicide inspection/verification criteria that must be met. In the case of Genuity RoundupReady 2 Yield® production, producers need to record the
application date, rate, and herbicide used. Forms are available upon request from the MCIA office to assist producers in recording the required
information. In the case of LibertyLink®, Bayer Cropscience recommends an inspection and evaluation to confirm at least 98% of the plants are
tolerant to glufosinate herbicide in production fields of licensed seed varieties with maturities earlier than 3.5, but does not require that you report
results. For licensed seed varieties of 3.5 maturity or later, you are required to inspect the field after the first application of GLUFOSINATE
HERBICIDE to confirm at least 98% of the plants are tolerant and submit a Herbicide Tolerant Report within 14 days of inspection to the
Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA) as outlined in the production manual. MCIA inspectors are available to perform the post
application inspections or producers may elect to conduct their own inspections. Forms are available from the MCIA office to assist producers in
properly recording the inspection results if they elect a self inspection program. If MCIA will be performing the post application inspections, field
inspection request forms must be filed immediately after the field is planted. Please contact the MCIA office for additional information related to the
inspection and/or reporting requirements.
