Course Description:
Educational and professional goals: knowledge of the specific multidisciplinary diagnostics
and treatment for elderly patients.
LECTURES CONTENT: epidemiology of geriatric diseases, nutrition and metabolic
problems in elderly patients, somatically and mentally specific of geriatric patients treatment.
Changes in oral cavity in elderly patients, treatment planning and consultation with the
patients physicians. Principles of conservative treatment in geriatric patients (root caries, noncarious defects of dental hard tissue, endodontic treatment). Prosthetic treatment in residual
dentition and atrophied edentulous alveolar ridges, difficulties in edentulous patients
treatment, psychosomatic problems in prosthesis adaptation in elderly patients. Oral mucous
membrane diseases in geriatric patients. Burning mouth syndrome. Periodontal diseases and
their treatment in geriatric patients. Preparation of geriatric patient for the ambulatory surgical
treatment, surgical preparation of oral cavity for prosthetic treatment, applying implants with
prostheses in elderly patients.
PRACTICALS: Examination, diagnosis and treatment plan in geriatric patients. Performing
selective restorative, prosthetic, periodontal and surgical procedures in geriatric patients.
Planning of the integrated dentistry treatment for institutionalized elderly patients.
Scope of requirements of practical skills: Examination, diagnosis and integrated treatment
planning in geriatric patients. Planning and performing selective restorative, periodontal and
surgical procedures in geriatric patients. Instructing of patients on hygienic care and other
measures to improve the oral mouth health.
