Practical, Proven and Effective Interventions
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)
TITLE: Enhancing the Pyramid of Interventions System for Assisting Struggling Learners in Reading, Math, and
Writing
PRESENTER: John Begeny, Associate Professor of School Psychology, North Carolina State University
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This presentation will describe a flexible and resource-efficient model of assisting struggling learners that can be
successfully used in elementary schools with varying strengths, weaknesses, resources, and organizational
structures. Designed to align with and enhance a school’s existing practices, the model can be implemented
incrementally by various educators, including school principals, special education teachers, school psychologists,
and reading specialists. The model can also support and easily fit with RTI and Georgia’s four-tier Pyramid of
Interventions. The well-aligned procedures, reproducible materials, and free support for using this model will also
be discussed. For a “pre-presentation” introduction to this model, visit www.sopaaforschools.org.
TITLE: Fidelity Intervention Tools
PRESENTER:
Dr. Paula Freer, Program Specialist, GADOE, RTI, SST and Psychological Services
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Fidelity is an essential component to a successful RTI framework. It plays a key role in
data-driven decision making, the foundation of RTI. Fidelity is important at both the system/school level
(implementation of the RTI process) and at the teacher/interventionist level (implementation of intervention and
progress monitoring). This session will provide an overview of fidelity as a framework, highlighting the importance
of intervention fidelity and provide resources to build fidelity supports in your school/system.
TITLE: Four Free Research-Based Interventions for RTI That Work
PRESENTERS: Dr. Seajae Hartness, Intervention Specialist; Laura Smith, Assistant Principal Shelton Elementary, &
Dr. Gloria Navarro, Director RTI
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: This presentation will share the success story of Shelton Elementary School where
more than 19,000 interventions and 11,000 progress monitoring assessments were conducted from 2009 to 2011.
We will discuss the large number of students that responded at each tier of intervention and how teacher buy-in
was increased. The focus will be on fidelity of intervention data, free reading interventions, and technology. We
will discuss pathways to RTI success and failure. Paulding's Intervention Dictionary, free progress monitoring and
intervention material, free software, and RTI forms (located on the conference CD) will be discussed.

Practical, Proven and Effective Interventions
TITLE: Functional Behavior Assessment for Tiers Two and Three
PRESENTER: Jean Ramirez, Trainer and Consultant (formerly with the GADOE)
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: This session will give tools to conduct an efficient functional behavior assessment for
students at tiers two and three. It will show how to use a team approach to build a student support plan that can
be implemented and measured in the student's current setting by working with individuals who know the student
best.
TITLE: Helping Students Remember: Implementing an Evidence Based Strategy Curriculum for Improving
Memory
PRESENTER: Jennifer Schau, School Psychologist, Forsyth County
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Participants will be provided with an overview of how to implement a memory
lesson/study skills curriculum for Grades 3-12 with partial content available for Grades 1 and 2. Materials and
resources are available in the book “Helping Students Remember: Exercises and Strategies to Strengthen Memory”
by Milton Dehn.
TITLE: HELPS: A Research-Verified Reading Fluency Intervention (A Double Session Workshop)
PRESENTER: John Begeny, Associate Professor of School Psychology, North Carolina State University
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Designed to address the fluency needs of early readers through high school level,
attendees will learn primarily through hands-on activities how to use the Helping Early Literacy with Practice
Strategies (HELPS) one-on-one reading fluency program—a research-validated program that can be accessed freeof-charge (see www.helpsprogram.org). The HELPS Program that can be used with small groups of 2-6 students will
also be introduced. Finally, attendees will learn how to access supplemental resources that will assist in the
process of training other educators (e.g., other classroom teachers, school volunteers) to use HELPS.
TITLE: Intro to PALS Reading (K-12) and PALS Math interventions (Gr 2-6)
PRESENTER: Dr. Paula Freer, Program Specialist, GADOE, RTI, SST and Psychological Services
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: PALS Reading and PALS Math, peer-mediated tutoring interventions, were developed
at Vanderbilt University. They can be used with high, average, and low achievers at Tiers 1, 2, 3 and 4. PALS
accelerates student achievement in reading and math, while motivating students through successful peer-assisted,
learning activities that address the problems they are experiencing. PALS is designed to complement, not replace,
existing reading and math curriculum. This session will: 1) Provide an introductory review of PALS Reading and
PALS Math interventions and 2) Highlight how technology, via the web-based instructional materials (IRIS - Star
Legacy Module) can be used to support professional learning for the PALS Reading intervention.

TITLE: Literacy Planning, Resources and Funding
PRESENTER: Julie Morrill, Program Manager-Striving Reader Program and Literacy, GADOE

This session will allow an opportunity for questions and answers as well.
TITLE: More than a Mirror; Data as a Window for RTI and CCGPS
PRESENTERS: Rita Wright, STAR Academic Advisor and Ellen Gadberry, Central Georgia (Renaissance Learning)
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Drawing on the work of Dr. Damien Betebenner and his development of the growth
measure known as Student Growth Percentile (SGP), this session will broaden attendees’ capacity to see instructional
next-steps in both formative and summative data. Low and no-cost reading interventions that can be assessed and
documented with Accelerated Reader and STAR Reading Enterprise (SRE) will be discussed, and attendees will also
receive sample Core Progress teaching activities from SRE .
TITLE: Motivating Teenagers: Making Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Work at the High
School Level
