Each student will complete a Hurricane Assessment Project which
will count as an assessment grade for this unit. You must complete and
turn in all of the following steps for this project.
______Step 1: Create and fill in a T chart like the one below. Use the
Weather and Climate pages 55-56, your Maryland Hurricane Guide, your
Blown Away paper, your Hurricane guide answer sheet and pages 24-25 in
the Science World magazine as a resource.

______STEP 2: Check to make sure your have answered all the guiding questions in
your T chart:
1. What water temperature and depth is required for hurricane formation?
2. What wind conditions are required for hurricane formation?
3. Geographically, where in the northern hemisphere are hurricanes formed?
4. Which direction do hurricanes spin?
5. What causes the rotation of hurricanes?
6. What the wind speeds of various levels of hurricanes?
7. What are the storm surge heights of various levels of hurricanes?
______STEP 3: On the back of your T chart. List the 5 steps of hurricane
formation. Use the same resources as STEP 1.
______STEP 4: Create a 4 section rough draft of a brochure which explains to the
public the hydrospheric and atmospheric conditions needed for hurricane formation
and how to prepare for it.
Section 1 – explain all the necessary hydrospheric (ocean) conditions needed for
hurricane formation.
Section 2 - explain all the necessary atmospheric (air) conditions needed for
hurricane formation.
Section 3 – Detail the 5 steps which tell how a hurricane forms.
Section 4 – Describe the steps a homeowner should take when a hurricane ( at least
cat 3) is imminent.
______STEP 5: Homework : edit your rough draft – make editing corrections right
on your paper.
______STEP 6: In the media center, using either WORD or Publisher, create your
final copy of your Hurricane Brochure. Use spell check and correct spelling errors.
Make sure your NAME AND DATE AND BROCHURE TITLE are on the front page of
your brochure.
______STEP 7: LOOK on google.com image and find at least 3 images of a hurricane
or preparednedd to paste somewhere in your brochure. Print ONE copy of your
brochure. Paste your brochure on the class wiki HURRICANE page.
______STEP 8: Check with the project checklist to make sure you have all the
necessary information. Staple all papers in the following order:
1 – project rubric
2 – printed brochure
3 – diagram of Hurricane formation
4– rough draft
5 – T chart
