1-3 POSITIONS:
GS-0462-04,$13.41 per hr/ Biological Science Technician – Plants
GS-0404-03,$11.95 per hr /Biological Science Aid
The Lincoln National Forest, located in south central New Mexico may be hiring 1-3 positions to serve on a
monitoring crew at the forest or district level. Data collection may occur on two mountain districts and one
desert district. Data collection will require periods of time away from duty station either camping or in other
government facilities. Projects may require up to 8 weeks of time away from duty station. Crew members’
travel to projects on Monday and return to duty station on Thursday. Duty station is Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Housing may be available at duty station.
Employees in this position will gain experience in forest service data collection methods for forested and nonforested (rangeland) ecosystems. Data will be used for resource management related to evaluation of
vegetation treatments, fire effects, and future vegetation planning. Employees will gain knowledge and skills
of forest service data collection methods; Common Stand Exam (CSE) and Common Non-Forested Vegetation
Sampling Procedures (CNVSP). Additionally skills in map, compass, and GPS to navigate in areas will be
required. Work will require extensive identification of plants, habitat types, and general exposure to multiple
southwest ecosystems. Data entry, analysis, and writing skills are a must. Work requires extensive periods of
time hiking in remote landscapes of varying topography and weather conditions. Some wildland fire training
and exposure may occur. Data collection may occur in active and inactive wildfire areas.
