Summer Arts Under the Umbrella Care of a Mildly-ill Camper, Medication Administration, and Emergency Procedure Summary The Umbrella and the Summer Arts Under the Umbrella (SAUU) program consider the health and safety of children of paramount importance. To that end, we have established the following policies around the care and needs of children. RECORDS All health forms must be on file prior to any child beginning his/her summer session. It is a violation of state regulations to allow any child to engage in activities at SAUU without the proper health information complete, up to date, and on file. MILD ILLNESS If a child is feeling mildly ill during the day, every effort will be made to care for them at SAUU. In the event of a mild illness that does not warrant being sent home, we provide a private place with a cot for children to recline for the duration of their symptoms. However, should their illness be better cared for at home, parents will be asked to make arrangements for them to be picked-up. We ask that parents do not send children to camp if they are not feeling well that morning. We will call home if a child experiences fever, nausea, vomiting, rashes, a bump to the head, or any other injury that would require further observation. Please keep a child at home if he/she experiences any of the following symptoms: Fever of 100 degrees or higher (Children should be fever-free and off Tylenol for 24 hours before returning to SAUU) Flu-like symptoms Sore throat, particularly with swollen glands Cold symptoms such as repeated coughing or sneezing, which are likely to spread infection Significant headache, stomachache, or chest pain Obvious infections such as chicken pox (all lesions should be crusted over before returning to SAUU) Contagious skin disease such as impetigo Contagious illness such as strep throat Conjunctivitis (must be on antibiotics; see below) Nits or head lice Any illness where a child is unable to participate fully in SAUU activities Note: Children placed on antibiotics should be on them for 24 hours before returning to SAUU. MEDICATIONS Prescription medications must be in the original pharmacy containers. We require a written order from the doctor and signed consent from parent before administering any prescription medication. The parent should deliver medication directly to one of the Health Supervisors, each Monday. If prescription medication requires refrigeration, parents must bring it in a sealed container, which will be stored in our on-site refrigerator or freezer. It is the parent’s responsibility to deliver and retrieve medications daily. To provide specific over-the-counter medications for a child, it must be in the original packaging, and a written consent with specific instructions re: dosage and frequency must be included, signed by the child’s physician or parent. If there is any question about the dosage or frequency, we will not administer a medication. The Health Supervisor will call parents to obtain verbal permission if a non-emergency need arises for over the counter medications that we stock such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Benadryl. Parents may write a letter giving permission ahead of time. It is the responsibility of parents to make SAUU staff and administration aware of any chronic illness such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder or any life-threatening allergy of their child. In instances such as these, an Emergency Care Plan signed by parents and doctor must be provided to the Health Supervisor. This plan should outline measures to be taken in the event of emergency, including medication and dosage to be administered. If a child has a severe allergy or asthma that may require an EpiPen and/or inhaler, parents must provide SAUU with two EpiPens and/or inhalers, one of which will be carried by the Assistant Teacher, and one that will be kept in the Infirmary and used in the event of an emergency. Medication Administration Log The Health Supervisor will maintain a daily log for medication administration for each Medication Request/Permission received. Authorization for Medication Form All parents are required to fill out a Camper Emergency Contact and Health Record Form before any prescription or non-prescription medications can be administered. Topical Ointments Topical ointments such as bug spray and sunscreen will be administered if the staff deems it necessary for the health and safety of the children unless specifically instructed by a parent or physician not to do so or written on the Camper Emergency Contact and Health Record Form. Topical ointments for first aid such as Neosporin and Burn Gel will be administered as needed for appropriate injuries unless written request signed by a physician or parent is delivered to the Health Supervisor. FIRST AID EQUIPMENT First Aid will be administered and maintained by the Health Supervisors in the Director’s Office. However, there will be a small first aid kit in each class, having the minimum contents of the standard first aid kit and supplies recommended by the American Red Cross and Early Education and Care: Rolled Gauze Adhesive Tape Gauze Pads Resuscitation Mask Triangular Bandage Blanket Scissors Tweezers Hand Cleaner Band-Aids Disposable Gloves Cold Pack EMERGENCIES Parents should make sure that we have correct phone numbers on file for the entire time a child is at SAUU. Although they are infrequent, emergencies do happen. Many of our Lead Teachers and Assistant Teachers are certified in CPR and First Aid. We want to be able to reach parents so that they are available for their child. The Health Supervisor will call parents and guardians immediately following initial care of the child, when the child requests that we call, or when it is determined that the child should not return to the group in order to receive further medical attention or for other health reasons. If there is an emergency that requires a call to 911, we will notify parents immediately. The Director of Education will be notified as well as the Executive Director of the Umbrella. In the event that a child needs transportation in an ambulance and a parent has not yet arrived, either the Director of Education or the Executive Director will accompany the child to the hospital.
