Complimentary activities on a weapons licence

All persons wishing to obtain a weapons licence in Queensland must have a genuine reason for obtaining the licence and meet a range of legislative requirements relating to that genuine reason.

Licence holders are only authorised to possess and use the category of firearm for which their licence has been issued or in accordance with legislation. A firearm may only be used for the conditions endorsed on the licence as the genuine reason for the weapons licence. For example, with a licence endorsed for the genuine reasons of sports or target shooting and recreational shooting, the licensee cannot use a weapon for an occupational purpose under this licence.

A licensed farmer that is endorsed for the purpose of occupational (primary producer/rural employee) may use the same category A or category B weapon/s for all purposes endorsed as the conditions on the firearms licence. For example, a farmer that is endorsed for occupational (primary producer/rural employee); recreational shooting and sports or target shooting is able to use the one category A or category

B weapon for all three genuine reasons, you are not required to purchase a separate weapon for each genuine reason.

Weapons Licensing do recognise that there are some complimentary genuine reasons on a firearms licence for categories A and B, please refer to Appendix A below.

Complimentary recognition of genuine reasons for all other weapon categories in Queensland are incompatible as the categories require justification and evidence to support each genuine reason in accordance with legislative requirements.

In relation to a concealable licence issued for the purpose of only occupational (primary producer/rural employee) the firearm can solely be used on the permitted property and cannot be used at an approved pistol club for sports or target shooting. However if a concealable licence is endorsed for both occupational (primary producer/rural employee) and sports or target shooting, a weapon nominated for use on the property can be used on the permitted property and at an approved pistol club so long as the suitable sports or target shooting conditions are endorsed on the applicants licence. If the concealable licence has more than one weapon registered to the licence, only the nominated weapon/s in the condition codes of the licence can be used on the permitted property. In the case of sports or target shooting with high calibre pistols (Class C pistols with a calibre of .38 or above) these weapons can only be used for the purpose of sports or target shooting if the approved pistol club is suitable for the use of these calibres and the concealable licence is endorsed for metallic silhouette or single action shooting.
